Read More	Hazel Miller Hight, 82, died Monday, May 5, 2008, at her home in Roseland. Born in Nelson County on Dec. 9, 1925, she was a daughter if the late Clarence M. and Maude Little Miller. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Robert Preston Hight, in January 2002. Hazel was an active member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Roseland Rescue Squad Auxiliary. She was a beloved wife and mother, and will be sadly missed be her many community friends. She is survived by a son, Robert (Bob) Hight Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Level Green; a daughter, Ellen Catherine Hight of Lovington; one brother, Pettit (Carl) Miller of Amherst; two sister, Virginia M. Bryant of Piney River and Grace M. White of Lynchburg; and three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2008, at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home, by the Rev. C Randall Harlow, with burial in Bethlehem UMC Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2008. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 7577 Patrick Henry Highway, Roseland, VA 22967. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Suggested edit: From Nelson County Virginia Heritage 2000 HAZEL MILLER HIGHT Memories Of My Life In Nelson County In 1889, my grandparents, Robert Joseph Miller, a farmer and his wife, Elizabeth, came to Nelson County from Rockbridge. They bought "Level Green", which is located about two miles west of Massies Mill, just off of Dickie Road. The property had been owned by Major Massie who came to Nelson in the late 18th century and built, first, a small house which was completed in 1798, then a larger one which was completed in 1803. The property was owned by the Massies until it was sold to my grandfather by one of Major Massies' daughters, who was married to a Ligon. "Level Green", with 75 acres, is now owned by my son, Robert Preston Hight, Jr., and my brother, Pettit Carl Miller. My grandparents had five children: Guy, Clarence, Robert, A. Pettit and Nettie. When my grandfather died in 1940 his land was divided, each child receiving a share. My father, Clarence, and his wife, Maude Little, got the land next to the Priest Mountain. At first they lived in a log house where my sister, Virginia, was born. Around 1919, my father had an eight room house built with porches and a spring house attached. This is where my other sisters, Grace and Mary Evelyn, a brother, Pettit Carl, and I were born. Mary Evelyn was born on Christmas Day, 1919, and died the next day. We were lucky because we had water by gravity allowed us to have an indoor bathroom. The water ran through pipes to the stove where it was heated, then stored in a tank until needed. We had cows to milk, chickens and hogs to feed and a big garden. I remember catching trout out of Rocky Run, packing apples in barrels out in the orchard before a packing shed was built. In the mountains there were chestnut trees and when the chestnuts fell out of their hulls they could be picked up and sold to make money. We also picked blackberries, raspberries near the house and huckleberries in the mountains. There were wild strawberries in the orchards. On Sundays when we came from Church we would stop at the icehouse which was near the "Level Green" house, get a big chunk of ice to make ice cream in a hand cranked freezer. In the spring house, though which water constantly ran, we could store the ice and crocks of milk to keep cool. To attend school I walked about a mile to catch the bus. I started first grade at Rocky Run School, but transferred to new Fleetwood in the third grade and graduated from there in 1944. Soon after graduation I went to Washington, D.C., and worked at the Navy Department until I married Robert Preston Hight in 1945. We had a son, Robert, Jr., then moved away from Nelson County for about eleven years. After moving back to the country we had a daughter, Ellen, in 1971. I now live in the house that Harry Bowling, principal of Fleetwood School, had built in 1910. It is located on Patrick Henry Highway across from Old Fleetwood, which is now the residence of Gladys White. My family and I belong to Bethlehem Methodist Church in Roseland. I am a member of the Roseland Rescue Squad Auxiliary which was formed in 1977.
