Description	:	HRABAK FUNERAL HOME Hazel M. Behounek, 90, of Chelsea, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008 in her home from complications of age. Services will be 10:30 AM Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chelsea by Deacon Joe Behounek. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after 8:30 AM until the time of service Saturday at the church. There will be a Rosary at 9:00 AM. Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine is serving the family. She is survived by daughters, Carol Behounek of Chelsea, Marlene (Darwin) Stepanek of Grinnell, and Mary (Jeff) Crawford of Knoxville; son, Steve of Chelsea; sister, Margaret (Lyle) Tatman of Glendale, California; also by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Hazel Marie Davis was born October 25, 1918 to Henry and Lena Davis on a farm east of Belle Plaine. She learned hardship at an early age with the loss of a newborn sister and brother, then her father of a stroke at age 8. During the depression her family moved to a farm north of Ladora . She loved to walk barefoot and paint her finger nails. Her mother always managed to save a nickel, just for Hazel's nail polish. We recall the story of her having to choose between her graduation pictures or her class ring, and the pictures won. She worked as a housekeeper/nanny following graduation. She met Wesley Behounek at a dance and they were married in 1940. They raised four children on the family farm near Chelsea. She sewed, patched and mended countless jeans and socks during her life. Faith was a very important part of their lives. Hazel learned to drive at age 30 so she could drive her children to and from parochial school in Chelsea. She fried many chickens and made dozens of kolaches for St. Joseph's annual fall festival. Wes, Hazel and the children all worked at any event the church would schedule, and all were members of the Catholic Order of Foresters. To family and friends who stopped by the farm, they were always welcome to stay for a good home cooked meal. She spent many hours in the garden and canning. Nothing could beat the smell of her apple butter simmering as her children came home from school. Raising her chickens and selling the eggs also kept her busy. Many stopped by to get some of her farm fresh eggs. Wes died of cancer in 1988 and it left a big void in her life. She insisted on staying on the farm with Carol and Steve's help. She suffered a heart attack 6 years ago and her health continued to decline. Reading books and newspapers kept her busy. It was pretty common to find her in the morning, with a book and a rosary still in her hand. It became apparent that Steve and Carol needed some help caring for Hazel, so it became a joint family endeavor. Mary and Marlene alternated weekends while 2 grand-daughters Darci and Dori each took a day during the week. Hospice came aboard 2 months ago due to her end stage heart failure and the natural aging process. She died in her sleep early Wed. morning October 29, 2008 still on the farm. She will be remembered for her kindness and caring throughout her life. She is survived by her children, Carol Behounek-Chelsea, Marlene Stepanek(Darwin) Grinnell, Steve Behounek-Chelsea, and Mary Crawford (Jeff)-Knoxville. Grandchildren include Wes, Cory and Ethan Behounek, Dara Stepanek Knudtson, Darcia Stepanek Dean, and Doria Stepanek, 2 great-grand children Aiden Behounek , Carlie Knudtson, and one sister Margaret Tatman (Calif.) She was preceded in death by her husband Wes, her parents, 2 sisters: Carolyn Boddicker , Pauline Cox, 3 brothers: John Davis, Fernie Davis, Francis Davis, an infant brother and sister.
