Hazel was born on May 7, 1926 in Fremont, Nebraska to Oscar and Lulu (Seagle) Johnson. She was one of eight children. Hazel went to grade school at Inglewood School and high school at Fremont Senior High School. Brown died Sunday, January 6, 2002 near Peetz in a car accident at the age of 75. Hazel was born on May 7, 1926 in Fremont, Nebraska to Oscar and Lulu (Seagle) Johnson. She was one of eight children. Hazel went to grade school at Inglewood School and high school at Fremont Senior High School. After high school Hazel helped her father, Oscar who was a truck farmer and sold strawberry plants to nurseries in the Fremont area. Hazel put her name and address in a bunch of plants, and that is how she met Richard Brown, her husband. They were married December 1, 1947 in Fremont, Nebraska. To this union five children were born: Gary A. in 1948; Richard D. in 1952; Roger J. in 1954; Paul B. in 1956; and Mark W. in 1957. Hazel and Richard farmed 16 miles southwest of Holyoke in the Wages Community until June 18, 1985 when Richard died. Hazel continued living on the farm off and on until she moved to Sidney, Nebraska in November 2001. She married Gene Brewer in Fremont, Nebraska on June 1, 1991. Gene died on February 16, 1995. Hazel was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed every minute with her grandchildren. She was a great cook and she enjoyed gardening, harvesting and canning. Hazel was also a great conversationalist. Friends and family could sit and listen to her for hours, and what she talked about was never boring and always interestingâ€”so much so that people never noticed the time that had gone by. Hazel loved playing the guitar, writing music and singing in the church choir. She loved her church in Sterling which was like a second family, especially the pastor David Baines and his wife Renee. She was preceded in death by her father, Oscar in 1968, mother Lulu in 1977 and an infant sister Darlene in 1928. Hazel is survived by sons Gary A. and his wife Pamela of Holyoke, Richard D. and his wife Sharlyn of Loveland, Roger J. and his wife Dixie of Sidney, Nebraska, Paul B. and his wife Connie of Loveland and Mark W. and his wife Laurie of Holyoke; brothers Marvin Johnson and his wife Kathey of Fremont, Nebraska, Fred Johnson and his wife Ginger of Fremont, Nebraska; sisters Arlene Dillon and her husband Jim of Marshalltown, Iowa, Anna Mae Soderling and her husband Howard of Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska, Ruth Yeoman and her husband Joe of Boles, Arkansas and Shirley Carmen and her husband Orville of Ozark, Missouri; brothers-in-law Max Brown and his wife Betty of Holyoke, Von Brown of Larkspur; sister-in-law Emogene Martinson of Nampa, Idaho; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Services for Hazel P. Brown were held Saturday, January 12 at First United Methodist Church in Holyoke with the reverends Darrell Dennis and David Baines officiating. Interment was in Holyoke Memorial Park. ↩
