She was born on May 24, 1928, to Martin and Josie (DeBey) Renken on their farm north of Downs. She joined the Dutch Reformed Church at an early age. Read More	Hazel Ruth Petty of Smith Center passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at Mesa, Arizona. She was 91. She was born on May 24, 1928, to Martin and Josie (DeBey) Renken on their farm north of Downs. She joined the Dutch Reformed Church at an early age. Hazel attended Oak Creek Grade and Down High schools. After graduation she lived in Salina for several years working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. She married Duane Petty on October 26, 1950, in McPherson. They farmed north of Downs, where they worked together raising livestock and crops. In 1990 they retired and moved to their home in Smith Center and spent winters in Texas and Arizona. Hazel loved being side by side with her husband, Duane, on their farm. She was equally at home behind the wheel of the truck or in her kitchen making a meal for harvesters. She was a wonderful cook and a collector of recipes, which she eagerly shared with others. Hazel and Duane loved to travel and took many trips across the country in their camper and motor home. They enjoyed living in Kansas in the summer and Mesa, Arizona through the winter. Hazel is survived by her brother, Floyd Renken of Down, sisters-in-law Shirley Unruh of Hutchinson, Sue Petty of Osborne, Charlene Petty of Olathe, Ina Petty of Russell, brother-in-law Francis Petty of Weaubleau, MO, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Duane, in 2007 and her brother, Earl; three sisters-in-law, and four brothers-in-law. Memorial services will be Saturday June 13, 2020 at 1:00 pm at the United Methodist Church in Downs, KS. Memorials may be given to Smith County Hospital, Downs United Methodist Church and Smith Center United Methodist Church. Final resting place will be in the Downs Cemetery, Downs, KS.
