She passed on July 8, 2011, in Redding, Calif., at the age of 83 of natural causes. Hazel spent her younger childhood years growing up in Davis Creek, Calif., and the Willow Ranch area learning the responsibilities and hard work in the timber and mill industry. Her father developed a sawmill in Fort Bidwell, Calif., where she and her two younger sisters grew up working in the mill, learning the trade, cutting boards and making shingles. Hazel attended grade school in Davis Creek and Fort Bidwell and then on to graduate high school at Surprise Valley High School in Cedarville, Calif. She married her high school sweetheart Carol Toney on Sept. 28, 1946, in Reno, Nev. Carol was a cattle rancher in Lake City, Calif., and Denio, Nev., where they raised cattle, grain and grass and alfalfa hay. Early in their married years, Carol and Hazel worked the ranches and also worked in the timber industry falling timber and hauling logs. In October 1947, this union gave them a son James Ernest Toney. Two years later in 1949, a daughter Carolyn Violet Toney was born. As time passed, in the 1950s they devoted their time and energy solely to ranching. As necessary ranch responsibilities rose, such as working in the fields, driving tractor, hauling hay, assisting cattle drives, preparing large meals, etc., she did so without any hesitation. Whatever was needed, she was always by her husband's side to see that it was done. In the late 1950s, they added to their other responsibilities, a milk-hauling operation. They hauled milk in 10-gallon cans from Surprise Valley and Alturas, Calif., to the Crater Lake Creamery in Klamath Falls, Ore. When Carol was busy with other ranch responsibilities, Hazel drove the truck and handled these heavy cans of milk. One or the other of them made the trip three to four days a week, leaving at 2 a.m. to reach the dairies before morning milking. They picked up the full cans and left empty clean cans for the morning milk routine. After hauling the full cans to Klamath Falls Creamery and doing the proper exchange, they returned back home around 3 p.m. that same day. It was hard work and was done through all kinds of weather from hot summer days to cold blizzard winters. If she wasn't driving milk truck, she was hauling loads of hay even as far as the Tennessee Ernie Ford Ranch in Nevada. As the milk industry changed, so did Hazel and Carol. They went from hauling milk in cans to hauling milk in bulk tankers. This didn't stop Hazel. She learned to drive these big truck and tankers and could back these big rigs as well, in fact better, than many men. She continued to pump tankers full of milk from all the dairies in Surprise Valley and Alturas. This went on until the late 1960s when Carol let it be known his life dream was to attend college and study diesel engineering. Hazel supported his wishes and they quit the milk business so Carol could attend Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, attending college with their son Jim, both studying diesel engineering. Hazel and Carolyn stayed on the ranch to maintain several head of cattle and sheep, do the haying and allow Carolyn to finish high school. Hazel decided to subsidize the income by driving school bus full time in Surprise Valley. She and Carol had both driven bus over the years, driving high school students to and from athletic events. Therefore it was no challenge for her to drive bus from Fort Bidwell to Cedarville everyday twice a day. Along with her timber, ranching and truck driving, she was an accomplished seamstress. She was talented in this regard, many times designing her own patterns and making Pendleton wool jackets, suits and skirts to name a few. One of her proudest projects was the design and making of her only granddaughter's wedding dress. With its multi-faceted layers of ruffles, puffy sleeves, beading and long train, it was a masterpiece. Along with her designing and sewing was the elegant and meticulous hand work Hazel did. The handmade quilts she did completely by hand are truly a lost art. Many of her family members cherish this work today. Her detailed crocheting, embroidery and knitting work are treasures as well. Hazel worked part-time for Bank of America during her last years of high school and early in her marriage. After her husband completed college, they moved to Yakima, Wash., where Carol taught diesel engineering in a community college. Hazel decided that she would pursue her earlier banking career. She went to work for Wells Fargo Bank in Selah, Wash. At that time, she took classes to become a certified bank teller. Around 1986, she and Carol both retired and moved to Klamath Falls. Soon thereafter, she went back to work part-time as a teller again for Wells Fargo in Klamath Falls. In the early 1990s, she once again retired. In 1991, she and Carol decided to take a hospice volunteer training program and volunteer their services at C&N Home Health and Hospice in Klamath Falls. She found that she enjoyed being around the medical field and later decided to take a part-time reception position at C&N Home Health Care. She worked full and part-time until she finally completed her retirement in late 1996. It was a Godsend that she continued to work and give of herself to others because Carol passed away suddenly in 1994 and the work helped fill the void she faced. Throughout her life, she devoted herself to her husband, family and friends. She walked in her Christian upbringing throughout her life and her faith carried her through good and bad times all the way to her passing. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Carol, her parents and a baby sister, a sister Virginia McCombs, and a grandson Roy Neal. She is survived by a sister Mildred Burgoyne of Lakeview; sister-in-law Marietta Toney of Orland, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law Jim and Linda Toney of Lakehead, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law Carolyn and Randell Souders of Klamath Falls; granddaughter Orinda and husband Phil Weiss and two great-grandsons Garren and Jonathan Weiss of Livermore, Calif., grandson Scott and wife Julie Souders and great-granddaughter Kylee and great-grandson Dylan Souders of Klamath Falls, grandson Levi Toney of Everett, Wash., and great-granddaughter Megan Toney of Scotland, grandson Eric and wife Elizabeth Souders and great-grandson Ilya Souders of Omaha, Neb., many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
