Description	:	One of the original settlers to the Windthorst area was Heinrich “Henry” Zerhusen. He was born Dec 18 1836 in Germany. His father was Clemens (1800-1862) and his mother was Elisabeth Athmann (1809-1892). After his father died in Germany in 1862, his mother, Henry and sisters Josephina and Mary Agnes immigrated to America in 1865. The 1870 census list the families’ home in Kentucky and Henry’s occupation as a cigar maker. His father was Clemens (1800-1862) and his mother was Elisabeth Athmann (1809-1892). After his father died in Germany in 1862, his mother, Henry and sisters Josephina and Mary Agnes immigrated to America in 1865. The 1870 census list the families’ home in Kentucky and Henry’s occupation as a cigar maker. By 1872, Henry, his mother, Elisabeth, and two sisters, Josephina and Mary August, were living in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Centennial booklet recalls what took place from there “On February 21, 1878, a contingent of seven families and three single men left the civilization of Ohio and arrived in the wild west of Offerle Feb 24. Those seven families were . . . The three single men were . . . . Henry Zerhusen.” At the age of 42, his mother aged 69 and his two sisters headed out west on this new adventure. The family arrived in Wheatland Twp. in Ford County until their death. Elisabeth, who died on Feb 22 1809 and Henry, who passed Dec 18 1916 are the only Zerhusen headstones in Holy Family Cemetery in Windthorst. Mary Agnes married August Hessman and raised six children.
