Ms. Brackney, 98, of Aurora, former co-owner of the Dairy Queen on Lake Street, died Tuesday, May 4, in Elmwood Terrace in Aurora. Born and raised in Clemons, Iowa, Ms. Brackney took over her family's grocery in the late 1920s. During that time, she also tended to her ailing parents. "It wasn't easy running the store, and all the while caring for her folks," Orr said. "It takes a special kind of person to give that much of herself." In 1954, Ms. Brackney moved to Aurora, where she and Orr owned and operated the Dairy Queen until her retirement in 1970. "Those were wonderful years, filled with great memories of families and friends we really came to know and love," Orr said. "It kept us very busy and sometimes we'd work 16-hour days, but it was all worth it. It was one of the happiest times in our lives." In more recent years, Ms. Brackney volunteered at Copley Memorial Hospital in Aurora, where she was in charge of the reception desk. "Everyone knew her there, because she logged some 3,500 hours," Orr said. Ms. Brackney was an active member of New England Congregational Church in Aurora for 47 years and a member of the Aurora Area Zonta Club, where she was treasurer for years. Survivors include a niece, Patricia Johnson, and three nephews, Rogene Arney, Tedford Grimstead and Robert Grimstead. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in New England Congregational Church, 406 W. Galena Blvd., Aurora∼Helen A. Brackney, 98, of Aurora, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at Elmwood Terrace. She was born May 30, 1905 in Clemons, IA, daughter of the late Aaron and Jennie (Larson) Brackney. Helen took over the family grocery store from her parents in the late 20's. She cared for her parents for many years. Moving to Aurora in 1954 and was co-owner of the Dairy Queen on Lake St. She retired in 1970. Helen spent many years volunteering at Copley Memorial Hospital at the reception desk. She was a member of New England Congregational Church for 47 years and also spent many hours volunteering there. Helen was an active member of the Aurora Area Zonta Club serving as treasurer for years. Survivors include her best friend, June Orr; godchild, Danielle Gorder, Robert Shelly and Rachel Gorder of Aurora; a niece, Patricia Johnson; nephews, Rogene Arney, Tedford Grimstead, Robert Grimstead. Helen will be missed by her family and many friends. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Gertrude, Grace and Florence; her brothers, Ross, Guy and Ernest; nephews, Arlyn Grimstead, Donald Arney and James Brackney. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. from New England Congregational Church, 406 W. Galena Blvd., Aurora, IL. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to New England Congregational Church or the Zonta Club c/o The Aurora Foundation, 111 W. Downer Place, Aurora, IL 60506.
