Description	:	UNION, SC - Helen Carnell McWhirter of Union, South Carolina, passed away on the evening of Sept. 20, 2001. Mrs. McWhirter was born March 28, 1916, the daughter of the late Mrs. Ethel Foster Carnell and Mr. Fred Wilson Carnell. She was the wife of the late Harold Pierce "Skeet" McWhirter. Mrs. McWhirter was an avid gardener, devoted daughter, wife and aunt as well as a talented artist. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Union and was very active with the church circle as well as the alter guild. She sewed many of... Read More	UNION, SC - Helen Carnell McWhirter of Union, South Carolina, passed away on the evening of Sept. 20, 2001. Mrs. McWhirter was born March 28, 1916, the daughter of the late Mrs. Ethel Foster Carnell and Mr. Fred Wilson Carnell. She was the wife of the late Harold Pierce "Skeet" McWhirter. Mrs. McWhirter was an avid gardener, devoted daughter, wife and aunt as well as a talented artist. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Union and was very active with the church circle as well as the alter guild. She sewed many of the linens by hand that are used at the church alter today. She was also an avid reader. It was said at one time that she had read every book in the Union County Carnegie Library. Mrs. McWhirter, with the assistance of her sister, Sara Carnell Phelps and other family members, helped put together some of the history of Union County that was on display at the Union County Historical Society. Mrs. McWhirter loved her home and her hometown of Union, where she lived all of her life. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Gladin Scott of New Orleans, LA.; cousins: Mrs. Roberta Watkins of Union, Mrs. Better Ready of Columbia, Mr. Robert Foster of Edisto Island, nieces, and nephews, sisters-in-law Mrs. Clara Cooper of Greenville, Mrs. Dorothy Pardue of Lancaster, Mrs. Elizabeth McWhirter of Summerville, Mrs. Nell McWhirter of Florence and brother-in-law, Mr. Foy "Tee" McWhirter of Lancaster, SC. Funeral services were held at Grace United Methodist Church on Monday, Sept. 24th, Rev. Gary Byrd and Rev. Van Edington officiating. Burial followed at Rosemont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the church or charity of your choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangments.
