Description	:	Helen Catherine Augustin, 93, of Shelby, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at david place in David City, where she resided the last week of her life. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Shelby, with Father John Rooney officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 15 at the church, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Committal will be in the Shelby Catholic Cemetery. Dubas Funeral Home, of Osceola and Stromsburg, has been entrusted with arrangements. Helen was born May 21, 1918, in rural Shelby, to Frank and Anna (Thelen) Fozzard. She attended country school and graduated as valedictorian of her class from Shelby High School in 1936. On Aug. 3, 1937, she was united in marriage to Glen Karl Augustin at Sacred Heart Church in Shelby. They farmed and were cattle feeders north of Shelby. Helen also taught school in Butler County for three years until her Normal Certificate expired. They retired to Shelby in August 1985. She was an active lifetime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a 75-year member of St. Anne's Altar Sodality, serving three terms as president. She served as the parish correspondent to the Southern Nebraska Register, the Catholic weekly newspaper for the Lincoln Dioceses, for over 40 years. She served as a 4-H leader, served on the Polk County 4-H Advisory Board. She also was very involved in extension work. She helped organize the Clear Creek Extension Club in the early 40's. She served 18 years on the District 9 school board. She was a volunteer at Aquinas High School while her two youngest children attended school there. Until the spring of 2011 she was a volunteer at Good Samaritan Center in Osceola. She also served as secretary to the Platte Valley Feeders Auxiliary, later the Platte Valley Cattlewomen and was a member of W.I.F.E. Helen was a world traveler, having enjoyed all 50 states, traveling twice to Europe, rode the train through Mexico and sailed through the Panama Canal. Helen was also an ardent bridge player. Other interests included ceramics, yard and flowers, Nebraska football games and following her children and later grandchildren in their school activities. Helen took great pride in her family, and in the later years, her greatest joys were visits from her children and their families and going to the mail box for a letter from a grandchild. Helen is survived by her son, Larry (Deanna) Augustin, of rural Shelby; three daughters, Patricia (Wayne) Davis, of Columbus, Sandra (Dan) Reisdorff, of Lincoln, and Carole (Rick) Hoyt, of Peoria, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren, with a new addition anticipated in May; and two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Gillespie, of David City; nieces; nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Glen, in April 1986; and brother, Lawrence Fozzard. Memorials are suggested to Shelby Public Schools and Library or Shelby Senior Center in lieu of flowers.
