(Jensen) Drange of Shepherd. Helen was the seventh of 10 children born into the closely-knit family of Norwegian and Danish immigrants. Baker Helen Elizabeth Drange Baker died peacefully Saturday evening, Aug. 16, 2008, in Billings, at the age of 91. She was born April 17, 1917, to Hans C. and Marie B. (Jensen) Drange of Shepherd. Helen was the seventh of 10 children born into the closely-knit family of Norwegian and Danish immigrants. Throughout her entire life, Helen counted her brothers and sisters and their spouses as her very best friends. "The Boys and the Girls" meant the world to her. Helen attended school in Shepherd through eighth grade and then moved into Billings to attend Billings Senior High School, graduating in 1935. After graduation, she completed a hairdressing course at Billings Beauty College. While attending one of the Shepherd community dances, Helen met Leo B. Baker, newly arrived from Kansas. They saw the possibilities in each other and committed their lives together in marriage on July 23, 1938, at the American Lutheran Church in Billings. They were blessed with two children, Vicki and James. Together, they built Baker Steel Fabrication Company, which later merged with Anderson Steel of Great Falls, and finally formed Baker Enterprises, Inc. After Leo's death in 1983, Helen assumed the role of president of the family business. Helen was a lifelong member of American Lutheran Church, where she was active in circles and the Friends group. She was a devoted Pink Lady at Billings Deaconess Hospital, volunteering for many years in various capacities and later working as a patient advocate. She also assisted in countless elections in Billings. Helen was blessed with many wonderful friends. The Hobby Club/Red Robin Ladies are among her oldest group of friends who have stayed together from the child-raising years, through widowhood and into retirement. These women and her loyal church friends have been so much appreciated for their love and support of Helen, especially during the last two difficult years of her life. Helen was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. She showed everyone the true meaning of family by her love and care of various family members throughout the years. Helen was especially appreciated for her amazing Thanksgiving dinners for 35 or more. She loved family camping trips, traveling, boating, fishing, flying and needlework. She was an avid reader, a CNN devotee and a pie baker extraordinaire. Her motto was "Never turn down an invitation" and so she led a full and active life, sharing her humor with those around her. She will be sorely missed by her loved ones. Helen was preceded in death by her infant son, Gene Leo; her husband, Leo; and her son-in-law, Howard Rein; her parents; sisters and brothers and their spouses, Elvera (Sam) Wilhelm, Shalla (Roy) Bru, Gladys (Milt) Mongrain, Clara (Nick) Janich, Clara Pearl Drange, Harold (Dorothy) Drange, Clarence (Cody) Drange and Raymond (Charlotte) Drange. Helen is survived by her daughter Vicki Rein and son James (Claudia) Baker; granddaughters Kaia Rein, Kirsa Rein and Kelyn ; and grandsons James Baker and William Baker. Her brother, Elmer (Paulean) Drange; and sister-in-law Enola Kirby; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive her. Services will be held at American Lutheran Church on Friday, Aug. 22, at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow. Interment will follow at Mountview Cemetery.
