She was born Feb. 23, 1917, in Okanogan to William "Bud" Elgin and Vesta Rice Elgin. She retired after a lifetime of retail sales and buying in women's wear. She was noted for help in quilting. Survivors include a daughter, Joan Hartley, Carthage, Mo.; a son, William Elgin Moss, California; four granddaughters; 12 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren. She was cremated. A service will be held later when the family gathers at the graveside where she will be interred beside her husband, Lester (Curley) Moss, in Okanogan. Helen Elgin Moss, 92, was born in Okanogan, Wash., on Feb. 23, 1917, the first born of Wm. Grant (Bud) Elgin and Vesta Rice Elgin. She passed away Sept. 22, 2009, in Chino Hills, Calif, following a massive stroke. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lester (Curley) Moss, former Okanogan County Sheriff 1940-1953, who died in 1991; a sister Doris; and both her parents. Helen graduated from Omak High School in 1934 and married Curley March 28, 1936. They had two children, Joan Moss Hartley, of Carthage, Mo., and Wm. Elgin Moss of California. She worked for Schalow's Grocery Store in Okanogan as bookkeeper and for the American Red Cross while also serving as matron for the sheriff's office. She was proud of the fact she was authorized to carry a handgun; and knew how to use it. They moved to Coronado, Calif., in January 1953, after Curley resigned as sheriff. Helen worked for her great aunt Lelah Elgin in an exclusive dress shop until the death of her aunt. She retired in 1985 and they moved to Diamond Bar, Calif. in 1986 to be near their son, Elgin. Helen always had a big and beautiful garden, no matter where she lived, with orange trees, and lemon trees producing enough fruit for the entire neighborhood. School children would ask for flowers from her garden for their mothers and teachers. The roses were always her pride and joy. When not in the garden, she would be found sewing; first for her granddaughters and then later making beautiful quilts for everyone to cherish. Quilting took up a great deal of her time — the quilts became masterpieces of art. All her neighbors enjoyed pies, cakes, and cookies, and anyone ill could count on Helen to supply soup to get them well. I can remember bridge parties in Okanogan, Coronado and Chino Hills. She taught classes for beginning bridge players and always belonged to several bridge clubs. And then there was always the music. She played and taught piano and Wurlitzer organ for many years in her Coronado home. Of course, her granddaughters were blessed with a loving teacher and learned to love music. She is survived by her daughter, Joan Moss Hartley; her daughters, Jennifer Shobe of Midland, Calif., Joelle Church, San Francisco, Calif., Janin E. Bryon, San Diego, Calif.; 10 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by son, William Elgin Moss; and his daughter, Alison Asbury of California; and two great-grandchildren of California. Her friends and family held a memorial service in Chino Hills as it was her wish to be cremated and buried beside Curley in Okanogan Cemetery. She will be missed by all who knew her. A private graveside service will be held at Okanogan Cemetery on Thursday, June 3, at 11 a.m. Pastor John Richard of Omak Baptist Church will preside.
