Funeral services will be held Thursday September 8th at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Julesburg at 10am with Pastor Trent Christensen officiating. Burial will be at 2:00pm in the Venango Cemetery, Venango, NE. Helen E. Hahlweg Marquardt was born March 20, 1917 in a farm house located two miles west of Venango, NE. Her parents were Paul Wilhelm Hahlweg and Alma Emilie Einspahr Hahlweg. Paul and Alma moved from Kenesaw, NE and purchased a 400 acre farm in Sedgwick County Colorado about six miles northwest of Venango, NE in 1915. Helen was only 19 months old when on November 1, 1918 her father died. About one and a half years later the young widow, Alma, moved three year old Helen, her three brothers Clarence, Lawrence and Roscoe back to Kenesaw, NE to be near Alma's family. There was no social security or aid so the widow Alma and her four children farmed, raised chickens and milked cows so they could sell milk, cream, eggs, and meat. While the family lived near Kenesaw Helen attended Wanda Parochial School. In March of 1929, the family returned to the Venango area to operate the farm Paul and Alma had acquired in 1915. Shortly after returning the family included her cousins Milton and Bertha Einsphar. Helen grew up on this farm and lived within three miles of the homestead until 1985 when she was widowed and moved to Julesburg, CO the following year. Helen was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Venango, NE. She married John Herman Marquardt on January 27, 1937 in that same church. To this union were born three children: Raymond, Marcine and Kenneth. Helen's family and church were that most important part of this earthly life. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Helen helped on the farm and cooked delicious meals for family and hired help. Her pies, cakes, and mashed potatoes were relished by all. Helen took time to be an active member of the Lutheran Church at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and later St. Paul's in Julesburg, CO. In Venango she was a member of the Lutheran Ladies Aid and the neighborhood Jolly Get-Together Club. During World War II, with ladies of her church she prepared and served food for the troop trains by participating in the North Platte Canteen. In recent years she served meals at the Julesburg Senior Citizens Center. Helen is survived by her son Raymond and wife Alberta, their two daughters Debra Shano-Baiel (Jay) and their children Morgan, Madi, and McKenna Shano, and Jay Baiel. Ruth Miller and her son Kaden Miller all of Gilbert, AZ, daughter Marcine Patterson and her husband Dean of Wall, SD, and their sons Scott Patterson of Chancellor, SD and Kevin (Diana) and children Dillan and Delaney of Sioux Falls, SD, son Kenneth and wife Mary of Wallace, NE, Their sons Mark Marquardt of Wallace, NE and Kelly Marquardt (Jennifer) and children Rachel, John and Natalie of Dickens, NE. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband J.H. Marquardt, three brothers Clarence, Lawrence, and Roscoe, and great-grandson Trevor Patterson. Memorials can be made in Helen's name to Lutheran World Relief PO Box 17061 Baltimore, MD 21298-9832 or to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Julesburg. Austin-Tennant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
