Memorials in Helen’s honor have been established to the North Platte Valley Museum in Gering, the Farm And Ranch Museum in Gering, and to the Federated Church in Mitchell. Jones Mortuary in Mitchell is in charge of arrangements. Helen was born on September 24, 1912, the youngest daughter of Earl W. and Frances Maud (Hewett) Collins. She was born and raised on a farm homesteaded by her father in the Sunflower Community. She and her sister attended a one room school house near their home until 1918 when Sunflower Consolidated school district was built. She graduated in 1931. She continued her education at the University of Nebraska School of Nursing in Omaha. Following graduation, she returned to the panhandle and worked as a private duty nurse for one year. Helen married Harold M. Bartz on September 15, 1935. After one year living in Scottsbluff, they moved to the farm homesteaded by her father. Except for three years in Omaha and the short stay in Scottsbluff, she lived in the same house for 84 years. She would proudly say that she was sleeping in the same bedroom in which she was born. She was very active in the life of the Sunflower Community. She was a member of the Sunflower Women’s Club for 54 years; held every office except secretary and was also Scottsbluff County Women’s club president. She joined the Sunflower Study Club in 1936 and was a member 65 years. She was a leader of early 4-H cooking clubs and also served on the Scotts Bluff County Farm Bureau Board. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Mitchell. The Federated Church in Mitchell was her life long church home. Helen and Harold raised two daughters, Beverly Ann Bartz Tripple and Bonnie Mae Bartz Hieber. After their daughters reached adulthood, she returned to her nursing profession and retired from West Nebraska General Hospital with 20 years service. After Helen and Harold both retired, touring in their motor home became their passion. They visited Mexico and Central America as well as every state in the Union except Hawaii. After flying to London they rented an RV and toured the English countryside. Many winters were spent in Texas and Arizona. In 1996 an apartment in Northfield Village Retirement Community became home. She is survived by her daughters Beverly (Harvey) Tripple and Bonnie (Kenneth) Hieber; grandchildren Gregory (Marialena) Tripple, Susan Tripple Guzman, Russell (Sheri) Hieber, Charlie (Kara) Hieber and Travis (Retta) Hieber; and 11 great-grandchildren.
