She was born on August 22, 1912, in Lawrenceville, Illinois, the second of six children of Raleigh and Edith (Seguine) Sparks. In 1924 the young family moved to the oil fields of Midian, Kansas where Helen attended school and graduated from Midian High School in 1928. While working in El Dorado, she met her future husband, and the love of her life, Clyde Graham, and after a one week courtship, they were married in 1936. They operated Graham Grocery in El Dorado for many years. Living on several acres in southeast El Dorado, Helen soon found herself interested in flowers. This interest soon focused on tall bearded iris. In 1954, she and a partner purchased the Iris Gardens of world renowned hybridizer Henry Sass, of Omaha, Nebraska, and moved them to El Dorado. This bold move by this amazing woman thrust Helen into the national iris spotlight. She went on to introduce many cultivars of iris including Jungle Shadows, Pink Tiger, Kansas Kid, and Girl Scout. She won many awards at the state, regional and national level. She also did extensive work with lilacs, peonies, and day lilies. Her beloved husband Clyde passed away in 1961 and in 1965 she married William Reynolds of El Dorado. They were married for over twenty years. Helen traveled extensively, across the U.S. and to Europe and Asia. She was most at home in her garden where the motto was “Be nice or go away”. In her later years she remained active in the Wichita Iris Club, and she volunteered regularly at the Salvation Army. She was honored by a host of friends and family in August of 2012 as she celebrated her 100th birthday. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and siblings Mildred Bailey, Paul Sparks, Ernest Sparks and Raymond Sparks. She is survived by her loving sister, Irma Eastham of Gun Barrel City, Texas and many friends and family. Her friends and family will gather at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2014 at Carlson Funeral Home, El Dorado for a celebration of her life, led by Pastor Stan Seymour. Helen will be laid to rest at Sunset Lawn Cemetery, El Dorado. Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to the Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital Foundation or to the Wichita Iris Club.
