Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 – 7:00 pm with a Wake and Rosary at 6:30 pm Wednesday, October 9, at Miller Westside Chapel, 6200 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls, SD. Helen Evelyn Bauer, daughter of Carl and Lula (Johnson) Bauer, was born October 27, 1925 near Inwood, IA. Her elementary education began with a daily walk up the hill to a country school outside Inwood until Helen was 10 years old. At that time, she and her family packed up and boarded a train moving them to a farm near Farmer, SD. Continuing her school at Farmer for a time, she and the family eventually relocated one last time to Spencer, SD where Helen completed the final years of her grade school education. She attended high school in Alexandria, SD, and after graduating in 1943, she successfully passed the Civil Service exam and became employed by the Farmers Home Administration, where she worked for 7 years. On April 3, 1951, she married Cletus Determan and they made their home on a farm west of Emery, SD. Over the next many years, they welcomed and reared six children with Helen tirelessly devoting herself to home and family. With graduations and weddings eventually emtying the house, Helen soon revived her secretarial skills and accepted a position with the local newspaper, the Emery Enterprise, working there for several years. Upon Cletus' passing on January 14, 1983, Helen made a new home in Mitchell, SD, where she was employed at Shopko for a number of years. During that time, she met and wed Paul Hilgenberg on July 19, 1991, with whom she enjoyed traveling and snowbirding to Arizona before settling into a quieter retirement years later at Sunnycrest Village in Sioux Falls. Grateful for having shared her life are her children; Carol (Thomas) Schulte, Sioux Falls, SD, Jerry Determan, San Diego, CA, Nancy (Bill) Winans, Sioux Falls, SD, Marilyn (Terry) Kewley, Hartford, SD, Don Determan, Sioux Falls, SD; her husband, Paul’s children; Paula (David) Larson, Artesian, SD, Darla (Jack) Schooler, Wickenburg, AZ, Dan (Karen) Hilgenberg, Milbank, SD, Jim (Karen) Hilgenberg, Hemet, CA, Lisa Holleran, Phoenix, AZ; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; Several siblings; Dorothy Wagner, Spencer, SD, Shirley (Cletus) Heumiller, Salem, SD, Karen Hansen, Mitchell, SD, Virginia (Arnold) Eldeen, Spencer, MN, Carla (Barry) Eldeen, Burunsville, MN, Alvin (Darla) Bauer, Norfolk, NE, and James (Mary) Bauer, Salem, SD. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard “Cletus” Determan in 1983 and husband Paul Hilgenberg in 2014; and her daughter, Sharon Determan; siblings Delbert (Vera) Bauer, Glenn (Selma), Dean (Sharon), Rolland (Audrey), Donna, Kathy, and Junior. - Miller Funeral Home
