Description	:	Helen F. Thurston, of Grand Island, formerly of Shelton, died Monday, May 10, 2010, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Helen was born July 18, 1921, on the family farm near Gibbon to Art and Fay (Hudson) Holmburg. On Oct. 22, 1939, she and Robert Thurston were married. He preceded her in death in 1998. Survivors are: daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and Jack Abbit of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., and Kathy and Randy Bohnart of Grand Island; four grandchildren, two stepgrandsons, nine great-grandchildren, four stepgreat-grandchildren; and sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Jim Griffin of Titusville, Fla. and a host of... Read More	Helen F. Thurston, of Grand Island, formerly of Shelton, died Monday, May 10, 2010, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Helen was born July 18, 1921, on the family farm near Gibbon to Art and Fay (Hudson) Holmburg. On Oct. 22, 1939, she and Robert Thurston were married. He preceded her in death in 1998. Survivors are: daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and Jack Abbit of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., and Kathy and Randy Bohnart of Grand Island; four grandchildren, two stepgrandsons, nine great-grandchildren, four stepgreat-grandchildren; and sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Jim Griffin of Titusville, Fla. and a host of friends and relatives. She attended rural school at Dist.. 15 in Buffalo County and graduated from Gibbon High School in 1937, as valedictorian. She also attended Kearney Normal School (UNK). She worked at the Buffalo County Courthouse and as a dental assistant while in Kearney and in Denver. They moved back to Nebraska and in 1952 purchased the Shelton Cafe which they ran until 1971. They retired in 1988 and moved to Cocoa Beach, Fla. She belonged to many groups in Shelton and Florida, including the church, Eastern Star, Welcome Wagon, Cocoa Beach Chapter EA. P.E.O., and several bridge groups including a duplicate club. In 1998, they moved to Grand Island and she had made Riverside Lodge her home for over 10 years. She had been at the Good Samaritan Society in Wood River because of ill health for a short time. Her greatest joy was her family.
