Description	:	Helen G. Dehning was born in Pierce County to George and Marie (Luedtke) Schlote on July 1, 1931. On Aug. 1, 1931, she received the gift of Holy Baptism. Helen publicly confessed her faith and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Plainview on March 25, 1945. She attended District 52, Zion Lutheran Elementary School and Plainview High School, graduating in 1950. Helen married Mervin H. Dehning on Nov. 23, 1955, in Plainview. During their marriage they lived in Norfolk, Hutchinson, Kan., Hooper, Schuyler and finally in Seward. Survivors include six children: Mervin W. (Melanie) of Lincoln, Kevin (Terri) of Culver, Ind., Jodi (Brad) Fegley of Grand Island, Lin (Jane) of Cheney, Kan., Lea (Tim) Graybill of David City and Imogene (Tim) Watters of Panama; 15 grandchildren, Nicole Dehning, Chris (Rachel) Dehning, Tana (Will) Uffenbeck, Cassandra and Caleb Dehning, Alex (Justin) Slafter, Preston Fegley, Logan and Micah Dehning, Michael (Katie) Graybill, Myndi Graybill, Marc Graybill (and fiancé, Megan Arasmith), Anna, Christian and Ram Watters; and two great-grandchildren, Adam and Josie Graybill. Helen worked as a nurse's aid at Plainview Hospital before she was married. Then she was a stay-at-home Mom and focused on her family. She was a Den Mother, Sunday school teacher, organized the Walther League 4th of July plays, and served as a volunteer EMT in Winslow. When they moved to Seward, she enjoyed working at the Second Closet, retiring in 1993. Helen was very active in the church, most recently at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward where she was a part of the Quilting Comforters, Ladies Aid, the Widows Support Group and Wednesday Morning Women's Bible Study. Her special ministry was embroidering baptismal napkins used for many baptisms at St. John. She was a member of the Seward VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 2755 and the Utica American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 49. Helen died Oct. 27, 2013. Helen is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Hazel (Gerald) Kumm and Hattie Anna (Milford) Kumm, all of Osmond; sister-in-law, Verna Schlote of Plainview; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Orval and Elda Dehning of Lee's Summit, Mo., Lyle and Beverly Dehning of Longmont, Colo.; and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Dehning and Corabell Dehning of Julesburg, Colo., and Twyla Dehning of Big Springs. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Herman, Harry and Harvey; sister and brother-in-law, Hilda and Melvin Brown; sisters-in-law, Gladys and Loretta Schlote; brothers-in-law, LaVern, Delmar and Marion Dehning; and sister-in-law, Eilene Smith. The funeral will be at Faith Lutheran Church, 1245 N. Second St., in Seward with the Rev. Scott Bruick officiating. Burial will be in Seward Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Lin Dehning, Micah Dehning, Brad Fegley, Preston Fegley, Tim Graybill, Marc Graybill, Tim Watters and Christian Watters. Fremont Tribune
