Helen grew up on the family farm and attended Gardiner Elementary School in 1948. Helen participated on the girl's basketball team, played clarinet in the marching band while attending Perry High School. She graduated from Perry High School in 1952. she attended college at Iowa State University majoring in Home Economics from 1952 to 1955. Helen grew up on the family farm and attended Gardiner Elementary School in 1948. Helen participated on the girl's basketball team, played clarinet in the marching band while attending Perry High School. She graduated from Perry High School in 1952. she attended college at Iowa State University majoring in Home Economics from 1952 to 1955. Helen married Lawrence Roger Bice on March 18, 1956 at Christ Lutheran Church in Bouton. They raised three daughters: Karla, Karol and Karen. Helen was a very talented piano player and organist. She played the organ for the Trinity and Christ Lutheran Churches for many years. For many years Helen was an active member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She served as the National LWML President for 8 years. One of Helen's favorite travel destinations was to Germany to visit family and friends. Helen and Lawrence also visited Russia and the Ukraine as part of an agricultural sharing initiative. In 2001, Helen was selected as Mother of the Year by the Business Professional Women of Perry. Helen and Lawrence managed and operated the family farm for over 54 years. The farm earned recognition by the Iowa Department of Agriculture as a Century Farm in 2005. Helen was active in the local 4H and Iowa Farm Bureau for many years. Helen loved the farm life, especially tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. Helen was preceded in death by both of her parents, Emelia and Carl Hansen, and brother Harvey Hansen. Helen is survived by her loving husband Lawrence, of Ogden, IA, 3 daughters, Karla Bioce of Ogden, IA, Karol Bice Godwin (Gary of Ramona, CA, and Karen Sackett (Lynn) of Ogden, IA and a brother Jerry Hansen of Perry, IA. Helen has five grandchildren: Connor and Hannah Sackett, and Lucas, Lindsey and Logan Godwin. She battled lung cancer for over three years before succumbing to the terrible disease on January 25, 2009. Helen was a loving and caring person who touched many people's lives and will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Perry. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 27, 2009 from 12 to 9 p.m. with family present from 5 to 8 p.m. at Carris Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Peoples Cemetery in Rural Ogden.
