Description	:	Joan Graffis Short, age 86, passed away on March 1, 2010 at Arbor Trace Health Care in Richmond, IN. Born in Milwaukee, WI on July 23, 1923 to Thomas H. Graffis and Mary L. Read More	Joan Graffis Short, age 86, passed away on March 1, 2010 at Arbor Trace Health Care in Richmond, IN. Born in Milwaukee, WI on July 23, 1923 to Thomas H. Graffis and Mary L. Fitzpatrick Graffis, they moved to Richmond in 1929 and she was a resident of Wayne Co. the rest of her life. Moving to Pershing in 1931, she graduated from Lincoln H. S. in 1941. She was married to Wilbur Briar in 1942, and had two sons, Steven H. Briar and Michael G. Briar. In her early years in Dublin she was active in the Dublin Community Club and was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. During the next 67 years she was active in numerous organizations including Republican Precinct Committee Person in Dublin and later in Centerville where she moved with her second husband Charles Short in 1972. She was an ardent political activist (GOP) for most of her life. She was a member of the Dublin Post #338 American Legion Auxiliary for over 65 years and held the office of President as well as other Officer positions for many of those years. She was active in the DAR Old Trails Chapter for over 25 years, holding the office of Regent for six years; member of the Dames of the Court of Honor, Indiana state President for one year; member Daughters of Colonial Wars, state Recording Secretary for several years; member Daughters of American Colonists, state Recording Secretary for three years; member New England Women; member Phi Chi Epsilon sorority. After raising her two sons as a stay at home mother, she worked for Lee Cylinders- Golay and Co. in Cambridge City for seven years from 1972 to 1979. After moving to Centerville, IN she served on the Centerville/Abington Library Board; member Centerville Women's Club; the Historic Centerville Board; and the Salvation Army Board in Richmond. Also she sang in church choirs at the Cambridge City Christian Church and the Dublin Friends Meeting for numerous years. She was an artist, winning several awards, and a member of the Richmond Art Club. She was an avid unpublished poet, winning various awards since she was 13 years old. Joan is survived by her son Steven Briar of Centerville, two granddaughters, Christine Briar Boyer, husband Bill, of Boise, ID, and Julie Briar Grippo, husband Rene, great grandson, Ryan Grippo, great granddaughter, Jia Lin, all of Boulder,CO; one grandson, Chad Briar of Georgia; one brother Thomas Graffis, wife Betty, Greencastle, IN; and nineteen much loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Edith Graffis Pedigo; also son Michael G. Briar in 1982, second husband Charles C. Short in 1991, and first husband Wilbur G.Briar in 1994.
