She received her education in Canton. Helen married Harm Tilstra on September 9, 1944. The couple had five children. They divorced in 1969. Helen married Burnell Bud Jaques on September 16, 1970. She worked as a proofreader at the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader for many years before retiring in 1982. After retiring Helen and Bud spent several years traveling. They lived in Sioux Falls and later in Hurley. Following Buds death in 1999, Helen returned to Sioux Falls to be closer to her family. Helen was a member of Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church. She enjoyed Ladies Home League with the Salvation Army, TOPS meetings with SD TOPS #364 in Hartford, Senior Day Break, her Senior Companion, her Homemaker and visiting with her friends at her apartment. Grateful for having shared her life are five children, Gary Tilstra, Minneapolis, MN, DeLila Lambert and her husband, Ed, Sioux Falls, SD, Donna Hoffman and her husband, Bruce, Sioux Falls, SD, Darla Tilstra and her husband, Troy Clark, Cedar Rapids, IA, Claude Frazier III and his wife, Tanya, Des Moines, IA; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois Puterbaugh and her husband, Gerald, Sioux Falls, SD; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Ellis, Sioux Falls, SD; four step-sons, Raymond Jaques and his wife, Joanne, Issaquah, WA, Kenneth Jaques and his wife, Judy, Colorado Springs, CO, Richie Jaques, Sioux Falls, SD, Randy Jaques and his wife, Robin, Sioux Falls, SD; five step-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband, Bud, Helen was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila; her parents; two great-granddaughters, Hannah Jenner and Angel Lambert; two brothers, Lydell and Raymond Ellis; and her former husband, Harm Tilstra.
