Description	:	BARRE - Helen Hawes Strachan, 81, formerly of North Barre Manor, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin. Born on Oct. 6, 1926, in Cambridge, Mass., she was the daughter of Edgar L. and Helen (Laird) Hawes. She affiliated... Read More	BARRE - Helen Hawes Strachan, 81, formerly of North Barre Manor, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin. Born on Oct. 6, 1926, in Cambridge, Mass., she was the daughter of Edgar L. and Helen (Laird) Hawes. In 1929, Helen and her family moved to Stoneham, Mass., where she attended school, graduating from Stoneham High School in 1944. In 1945, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corps and was sent to the University of Vermont to study nursing. After three months, she was sent to the former Barre City Hospital to finish her nurse training. She affiliated to the Portland, Maine, Children's Hospital and then to Brooklyn, N.Y., for psychiatric training. In 1948, she received her diploma as a registered nurse. In February of 1947, she married James I Strachan. Following their marriage, they first lived in Springfield, Mass., where Helen worked for Dr. Leo Schwartz, a general practitioner. After moving to Schenectady, N.Y., she began work for Dr. D. H. Delisa, an ear, nose and throat specialist until moving back to Vermont in 1962. Helen held various jobs as a nurse in the central Vermont area including the former Barre City Hospital, the Central Vermont Medical Center and the medical office of Dr. E. V. Reynolds. After her husband became ill, she worked at the Waterbury Hospital and continued to work part-time for Dr. Reynolds. Helen retired from nursing in December of 1989. In September of 1990, Helen began work at JC Penney in Berlin in the jewelry department until 1996. In 1997, she began work for Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice. She is survived by her children, Bruce I. Strachan and his wife Gail, Nancy S. Buttura and her husband Fella, and Robbie B. Strachan and his wife Susan, all of Barre, and J. Douglas Strachan and his wife Pamela of Fishers, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Jenna Pereira, Heather Taylor, Ian Strachan, Kelsey Strachan, Kyle Strachan, Craig Strachan and Kevin Strachan; and two nieces in Maine. Her former husband; her sister, Edna H. Blaisdell; and a nephew, Robert Blaisdell, predeceased her. Per her wishes, services and interment with her family in Cabot will be at a later date next year. There are no calling hours. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641.
