Petersen, 79, of Hale, died Wednesday evening, June 11,1997 at the Anamosa Community Hospital following a sudden illness. Helen was born on February 18,1918 at Wyoming, the daughter of John F. and Emma Knutson Bennen. She attended the Wyoming Schools and on March 21,1936, Helen married J. L. Conwell at Tipton. Petersen, 79, of Hale, died Wednesday evening, June 11,1997 at the Anamosa Community Hospital following a sudden illness. Helen was born on February 18,1918 at Wyoming, the daughter of John F. and Emma Knutson Bennen. She attended the Wyoming Schools and on March 21,1936, Helen married J. L. Conwell at Tipton. After their maniage, they made their home at Wyoming. J. L. died of cancer in May of 1940. In May of 1944, Helen married Peter T. Petersen of Kahoka, MO. They made their home in the Wyoming area where they farmed. In 1947, they moved to the Hale area and continued farming until moving into Hale in 1949. Helen began working at the Hale General Store and Post Office in the early 1950s. She eventually bought the business in 1973 and continued to operate it until the fall of 1986. After selling the Hale General Store, Helen moved the Post Office to her home and she continued working until January of this year. Her husband, Pete, died in September of 1972. Helen was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church of Olin. She is survived by one daughter, Laverna Glenn Hanson and husband, Richard, of Cedar Rapids; one son, Bruce Conwell and his wife, Bonnie of Hale; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and a special nephew and niece, Herman and Lotus Bennen of Oxford Junction. Helen is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, one son-in-law, Jim; one sister and one brother. Funeral services were conducted 11:00 Saturday morning, June 14 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Olin with the Rev. Mary Anthony officiating. Burial was in the Wyoming Cemetery. Casket bearers were Greggory Glenn, Timothy Glenn, Daniel Glenn, Chad Conwell, Randy Goetz and Michael Deutmeyer. Hayden Funeral Home, Olin, was in charge of arrangements.
