On Feb. 7, 1959, she married Merrill "Mert" Bergstrom. He died Dec. 17, 1987. On April 19, 2003, she married Alvin "Al" Synovec. Survivors are: husband, Alvin Synovec; daughters, Judy Martinez of Grand Island, Jeanie Titkemeier and her husband, Larry, of St. George, Kan., Debbie Reiss and her husband, Randy, of Wilcox, Patty Volk and her husband, Matt, of Cambridge, Teresa Eckhardt and her husband, Marlon, of Holstein, Brenda Steele and her husband, Rick, of Wamego, Kan., Shelly Muir and her husband, Stan, of Franklin and Tammy Bergstrom and friend Tom of Kearney; brother, George Tappan of Elm Creek; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren with several more great-grandchildren on the way. She loved to hold and cuddle tiny babies, and God blessed her with many. She was raised in the Kearney area. She attended school at Sumner until the third grade. Then, she attended Bryant Elementary School in Kearney. Her family also lived on farms at Eddyville and Sumner. In 1944, her family moved to Cozad. She and Mert made their home on a farm northwest of Wilcox. Along with raising their eight daughters and helping on the farm, Helen worked as a cook at Bethphage Mission in Axtell and later as a cook at Wilcox Public School. She also owned and operated a dress shop called Lady LaVon in Holdrege for a short time. She was baptized and confirmed at Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk on Sept. 10, 1972. Helen loved to shop, or "clicking," as Mert would say, and enjoyed decorating her home and making flower arrangements. She was an excellent cook and loved to bake. Her family and friends each have their own special memories of her delicious cinnamon rolls. She moved into Wilcox and resided there until she married Alvin. They moved to Kearney and enjoyed many happy times together. They loved spending time with family and friends and their pet, "Snickerdog." She moved to Mother Hull Home in February 2010. In addition to her husband Mert, she was preceded in death by her parents; stepbrother, Russell Anglemyer; sister-in-law, Georgia Tappan; granddaughter, Courtney Marie Volk; and grandson, Nick Eckhardt.
