Description	:	Helen Louise Spencer, 89, long time Sioux County resident, received the greatest birthday gift when she went home to be with her Heavenly Father, Friday, June 20, 2014. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 24, at the Federated Church in Mitchell with Rev. Dr. Charles H. Richardson officiating. Casual attire is welcomed. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place in accordance with Helen's wishes. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date at Mitchell Valley Cemetery. Helen was born June 21, 1924 at Mitchell, to Earl and Nellie (Newell) Hatch. She was a long time member of the Federated Church being baptized June 30 1925 and becoming a member April 17, 1938. Helen grew up on the family ranch southwest of Agate attending a one-room school located in the ranch yard. Helen was a 1942 graduate of Liberty High School and attended the University of Wyoming for one year, being affiliated with Chi Omega sorority. The following year she began her teaching career at a country school in the Pine Ridge of Sioux County. The teacher was responsible for bringing the water and starting the fire each morning. Helen lived with a family, who gave her a horse to ride to school. She was told to turn him loose when she arrived and of course she had to walk home after school. Subsequent years saw her teaching at Fairview, Spoon Buttes, Carpenter, Chalk Butte and her home district where she was teaching when she married Guy Spencer November 17, 1946. Helen was a member of a pioneer family who first came west in 1885. Helen instilled a love of history in her children and grandchildren. She worked to share and keep local ranching history alive by hosting the Ranch Women's Round Up, a group first formed in 1929. She was a charter and life member of the Sioux County Historical Society, where she helped plan and lead tours of local ranches and points of interest. She also mapped Sioux County cemeteries, including lone graves on homesteads. She was a caretaker of the Rebecca Winters' grave, a pioneer who died on the Mormon Trail. Helen was the first teacher for the Sioux County Museum's 1880's school for fourth graders. Helen was a member of the first archeological dig at the Hudson Meng Bison site. A lifelong love of American Indians led to an extensive collection of artifacts, which she shared by giving programs to local schools and service organizations. She also helped area students with history projects. As a member of the Friends of Agate she worked to realize the dream of creating the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, which houses the Cook Collection of Indian artifacts. She contributed many photographs for several regional books. Helen gave many programs as an historian of the North Platte Valley Irrigation system. Her other interests and activities included Jobs Daughters & being a 4-H leader. Helen was a member of PEO, Western History Center & Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors include her daughters, Becky (Dennis) Eisenbarth of Torrington and Bonnie (Max) Cawiezel of Morrill; grandchildren, Tricia and Travis Eisenbarth of Torrington, Pete Cawiezel of Morrill and Casey (Tyler) Debus of Lyman; one great granddaughter, Lily Debus of Lyman; sisters-in-law, Vonie Hatch, Dee Hatch and Dorothy Schuman; and brother in law, Bud Spencer. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brothers, Lyle and Jim Hatch.
