Lane learned the old-fashioned forecasting tactics from her father, a Cumberland County farmer. In the 1940s she began predicting the weather by factoring the color of woolly worms, the thickness of corn shucks and the number of fogs in August. When one of her predictions published in the Crossville Chronicle came true after the winter of 1959-60 -- which brought 6 feet of snow to the area -- Lane became a media darling. Meanwhile, every summer for nearly four decades, reporters from across the state would seek her view on the upcoming winter. In recent years Lane's health problems made forecasting more difficult.
