Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Smithland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland. Helen Lucille Mead, daughter of Walter and Mabel (Chrestensen) Daniels, was born on July 31, 1920, near Smithland. She was raised and attended country school in the Smithland area. Helen was one of 13 children and she spent much of her younger years helping her family around the house. On Sept. 20, 1939, Helen was united in marriage to Clark Mead in Ida Grove, Iowa. To this union five children were born, Dick, Sarah, Pat, Dave and Carol. The family made their home near Smithland. Helen was a hardworking homemaker who cared for her family and numerous others. Clark passed away on Jan. 21, 1997. Helen continued to make her home in Smithland until September 2012 when she moved to Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting. Helen was a very busy person, who enjoyed crafts, crocheting, quilting and knitting. She made hundreds of lap robes and donated them to veterans and nursing home residents. She also enjoyed card games, puzzle books and watching wrestling, with her favorite wrestler being John Cena. Helen especially enjoyed being with her family. Helen is survived by her children, Dick (Carmen) Mead of Portland, Tenn., Sarah Ulven of Smithland, Pat (Bob) Moon of Bennett, Colo., Dave (Linda) Mead and Carol (Donnie) Larson, all of Smithland; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill (Karen) Daniels of Des Moines; one sister, Phyllis McLarty of Smithland; brother-in-law, Louie Allard of Brainerd, Minn.; sister-in-law, Shirley Daniels of Brainerd; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband; seven brothers; three sisters; one grandson; two great-granddaughters; and one son-in-law, Chuck Ulven.
