Born August 12, 1923, in Morgan Township near Schleswig, Iowa, Helen Marie Schagt was the daughter of Edward and Henrietta (Tamm) Jensen. Read More	Helen M. Schagt, age 83, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 31, 2006, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove. Born August 12, 1923, in Morgan Township near Schleswig, Iowa, Helen Marie Schagt was the daughter of Edward and Henrietta (Tamm) Jensen. She was baptized and confirmed at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. In 1930, Helen moved with her family to a farm in Ida County. She attended country school and graduated from Schleswig High School in 1941. At an early age, Helen worked with her father, learning his work ethic and love for the land. Her mother taught her many skills she used throughout her life from cooking and sewing to gardening and quilting. Being an only child, she became especially close to her Jensen cousins even to this day. Helen was well known for her beautiful flowers, sewing clothes for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and for her numerous quilts which have touched so many people. On April 8, 1945, she was united in marriage to Marven Knudsen at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Two sons, Marelle and Burdelle, and one daughter, Marette, who lived three days, were born to the couple. Helen worked with her husband on the farm and as a homemaker. After Marven's death on September 19, 1967, Helen moved to her home in Ida Grove. She was employed in the dietary department at Horn Memorial Hospital for seven years. Helen married LeRoy Schagt on August 19, 1976, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. They enjoyed 25 years of farming, visiting friends, going to auctions, and working together on their crafts and handiwork. LeRoy passed away on October 7, 2001. Helen's family was always her greatest joy; she was always interested in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities. Even with her many illnesses and problems throughout her life, she was always faithful to her Lord and maintained her "can do" attitude to the end. Helen was very active in the Ladies Aid while a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township, and quilted faithfully with the Dorcas Society of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. Survivors include two sons and their wives, Marelle and Cheryl Knudsen and Burdelle and Darnelle Knudsen, all of Ida Grove; two step-children, Jeannie Jorgensen of Manilla, and Ronnie Schagt and wife Mary of Carroll; four grandchildren and their spouses, Michelle and Tom Clifford, Cordell and Barb Knudsen, Chris Knudsen, and Marc and Ann Knudsen; three step-grandchildren, Jason and Ryan Schagt, and Christopher Jorgensen; nine great-grandchildren, Miranda, Marty, Kyle, Katie, Kollin, Hayley, Dallas, Madison, and Michael; a step-great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Elnora Petersen of Schleswig; as well as many extended family members and a host of friends. In addition to her two husbands and infant daughter, Helen was preceded in death by her parents and a step-son-in-law, Dana Jorgensen. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 3, 2006, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, the Reverend Gary Scharrer officiating. Pallbearers were Tom Clifford, Gene Ernst, Chris Knudsen, Marc Knudsen, Dale Schiernbeck, and Cordell Knudsen. Burial in Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa.
