Helen was born March 20, 1914, in Ralph, SD, the daughter of Anson and Appalonia (Wagner) Juelfs. Helen attended a country school near her home until high school. (Juelfs) Deutscher, age 97 of Wall, SD, died February 19, 2012, at the Golden Living Center Meadowbrook in Rapid City. Helen was born March 20, 1914, in Ralph, SD, the daughter of Anson and Appalonia (Wagner) Juelfs. Helen attended a country school near her home until high school. Her high school years were spent at a Catholic boarding school in New England, SD. During the depression when money was scarce, Helen managed to attend Black Hills Teacher's College, majoring in math with a minor in art. She spent the next ten years teaching in Harding County and throughout Wyoming. Helen was offered a position making maps for the government, but chose to get married instead. Helen married Reuben Deutscher on April 10, 1943, in Spearfish, SD. In 1946 they moved to a farm twenty miles southwest of Wall, where they spent over sixty years of marriage and raised two children. She was a 4-H leader, active in the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the Crooked Creek Extension Club, and a long-standing member of St. Patrick's Church Women's Club. Helen enjoyed baking, painting, sewing, and working in her garden. She taught her three grandchildren many things including how to drive, do algebra, bake from scratch, iron, pull rye, play softball, and pick potato bugs (for a penny a bug). She was loved and will be greatly missed by many, but none more than her children and grandchildren. Survivors include two children Charles Deutscher and his wife Bonnie of Wall, and Roxy Hunter and her husband Gene of Rapid City; three grandchildren Evan Deutscher of Wall, Leslie Merrill and her husband Shawn of Wall, and Dana Namken and her husband Keith of Watertown; six great-grandchildren Savanna, Samantha, and Searra Sioux Deutscher, Tearra and Cayne Merrill, and Henry Namken; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband Reuben, Helen was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved brother, Norbert Juelfs. In lieu of a visitation service, the family would be honored if anyone wanting to do so, would say a rosary or prayers in memory of Helen. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, February 23, St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wall, with Father Leo Hausman as celebrant, and Father Dan Juelfs and Father Kerry Prendiville as con-celebrants. Interment will be at the Wall Cemetery. A memorial has been established to St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Wall.
