She married John L. Witte on June 20, 1956, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. They operated the Witte Feed Mill in Petersburg for many years. John died on Nov. 18, 1977. She later married Dale J. Bartels on July 26, 1985, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier High School in Dyersville. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was instrumental in having Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Petersburg, listed in the National Historical Register. Surviving are her husband, Dale J. Bartels; three daughters, Ann (Brad) Bartheld, of Carmel, Ind., Kate Witte, of Findlay, Ohio, and Amy Witte, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Megan Bartels, of Houston, Texas; a stepson, Nicholas Bartels, of Chicago; three sisters, Lillian (Merlin) Jasper, of Manchester, Marian (Dave) Brunkan, of Dyersville, Mary Jane (Charles) Boerner, of Greendale, Wis.; two brothers, David (Marilyn) Lueck, of Petersburg, and Dennis (Sandy) Lueck, of Dubuque ; and two grandchildren, Matthew and Kristen Bartheld. She also was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Lueck, on Feb. 7, 1983; and her mother, Marie Lueck, on Jan. 9, 1998. A Helen Witte Bartels Memorial Fund has been established. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staffs at Dubuque Internal Medicine P.C. and The Finley Hospital for their excellent care and support for Helen during her extended illness.
