Brooks was born on November 3, 1930 to Leo and Rachel (Montange) O'Connor in Geddes, SD. She attended country school, graduated from Andes High School in Lake Andes, and received her teaching certificate from Springfield College in Springfield, SD. She married Wayne F. Brooks on June 18, 1951 at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Lake Andes. Helen taught at country school near Lake Andes for 3 years. She worked as a clerk at a grocery store, then worked at Andes Elementary School as a tutor for 27 years. She was an avid bowler, playing in ladies golf league, and loved to travel in her motor home. She enjoyed following her children and grandchildren for sporting and music events. She was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church and Altar Society and the Red Hatters. She died on March 27, 2012 at Wagner Community Memorial Hospital in Wagner at the age of 81. She is survived by her husband, Wayne of Lake Andes, SD 4 children: Keith (Gloria) Brooks of Vermillion, SD; Douglas (Robin) Brooks of Yankton, SD; Janice (Don) Hotchkiss of Freeman, SD; and Dennis (Tammy) Brooks of Amarillo, TX; 11 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, Roderick, Melvin, and John, and 4 sisters, Bernice Minahan, Maxine Nelson, Vivian McElroy, and Ilene LaVallee.
