She was born Oct. 5, 1927, in Chesterfield, a daughter of the late Edward F. Green and Lucy Jane Sullivan Green. She grew up in Chesterfield County and moved to Georgetown in the early 1970s. She moved to Marion in 1999 after the death of her husband, Walter Thomas ``Tommy'' Owens. Read More	Helen Owens MARION Helen Mae Green Byrd Owens, 75, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at Regency Hospital in Florence. She was born Oct. 5, 1927, in Chesterfield, a daughter of the late Edward F. Green and Lucy Jane Sullivan Green. She grew up in Chesterfield County and moved to Georgetown in the early 1970s. She moved to Marion in 1999 after the death of her husband, Walter Thomas ``Tommy'' Owens. Survivors include two daughters, Bonita Bryant and her husband, Paul, and Sarah Palmer and her husband, Larry, all of Marion; a son, Jimmy Hayes of Marion; a stepson, Howell Owens of Georgetown; three stepdaughters, Betty J. Owens of Myrtle Beach, Nancy O. Alger of Charleston and Patsy O. Avant of Pawleys Island; a sister, Mary Fipps and her husband, Freddie, of Glen Rose, Texas; three brothers, George Green and his wife, Lucille, of Whiteville, N.C., J.C. Green and his wife, Ellen, of York, and Floyd Green of Hampton, Va.; five grandchildren, Tanya Wheeler and her husband, Brian, Crystal Hayes and her husband, Michael, Edward Palmer, Kevin Palmer and Jimmy L. Hayes, all of Marion; a great-grandchild, Matthew Hayes of Marion; a number of stepgrandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a number of special friends. She was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Margaret Ann and her husband, Bozie Barrineau . Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at the home of Tanya and Brian Wheeler in Marion. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Rose Hill Baptist Churchyard. The Rev. Tommy Earl Barnhill will officiate. Visitation will also be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Mayer Funeral Home, Georgetown chapel. Memorials may be made to Rose Hill Baptist Church, 4681 Rose Hill Road, Georgetown, SC 29440.
