Helen was born on March 5, 1917 in Yankton, SD to Hallowell Judiah and Alice Elizbeth (Nordyke) Holmes. She was educated in Vermillion, SD and married Charles Octave Alcide "John O." Read More	YAKIMA - Helen Marie Girard, 93, passed away peacefully at her home on February 20, 2011. Helen was born on March 5, 1917 in Yankton, SD to Hallowell Judiah and Alice Elizbeth (Nordyke) Holmes. She was educated in Vermillion, SD and married Charles Octave Alcide "John O." Girard on October 3, 1934. Together they farmed in Elk Point, SD and Sioux City, IO before moving to Yakima, WA in 1943. The whole family worked for Pyramid Orchards from 1945-1954. After her husband passed away in October 4, 1954, Helen continued to work to support their 4 children, working as an egg sorter for Harris farms for 5 years. She later went on to work as a cook in the dormitory at YVCC in 1962 until retiring in June of 1985. She enjoyed many summers as a cook at various youth camps. After retiring, she and her good friend traveled across the US to explore the country and visit friends and relatives along the way. She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, quilting, gardening, and spending time with her expanding family. Many hours were spent playing games such as Rummy and Aggravation. She was well known for her cooking, canning, and baking - everyone flocked to grandma's kitchen for holiday meals and family gatherings. She could come up with a recipe for just about anything anyone wanted to try, and she always found a way to make it taste good and look easy with a pinch of this and a dash of that. Helen is survived by her son George (Jan) Girard of Cascade, ID; grandchildren Mark Girard, Bill Girard, Laurie (Stan) Ziemniak, Larry (Joyce) Ward, Cindy (Matt) Anderson, Donna (Jamie) Rice, Gerry (Diane) Girard, Denise (Shaun) Trujillo, Craig Ward, John (Samantha) Girard, Tana Girard; son-in-law Ladd Ward; 2 daughters-in-law Sharon Girard, Isabel "Diz" Girard; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her husband John, daughter Marie Ward, sons John and Don Girard, great-grandson Jonathan, 5 brothers and 3 sisters. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday, February 24, 2011 at Keith & Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. A Graveside Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 25th at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Keith & Keith Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements. "I would rather have a little rose from the garden of a friend, than flowers around my casket when my days on earth must end. I would rather have a living smile from one I know is true, than tears shed 'round my casket when this world I bid adieu." Anonymous In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society. After the service, a Celebration of Helen's life will be held at her home in Union Gap.
