She was born on the farm near Gandy on March 27, 1931, to Roxanna and John Millen. She attended school in Gandy, graduating from the Logan County High School at Gandy in 1949. She was born on the farm near Gandy on March 27, 1931, to Roxanna and John Millen. She attended school in Gandy, graduating from the Logan County High School at Gandy in 1949. Helen was united in marriage to James Ernest Holman of Geuda Springs, Kan., on June 6, 1948, in Stapleton. Just three weeks later Helen and Jim left Nebraska to go to Texas for work in the oil field. She completed her senior year through correspondence but returned to Gandy to graduate as valedictorian of her class. For the next 12 years she followed Jim's work as a roughneck, welder and custom harvester. Living in a small trailer, they traveled throughout the eastern and central United States, going form job site to job site. Along the way they started their family. It was here in Arnold that Helen and Jim raised their children. She also kept books for Jim's welding business from 1960 until he retired in 2006. She worked diligently in the community as den mother for the cub scouts, 4-H leader for twenty-some years, extension club, Legion Auxiliary member and officer for several decades and was active in the Welders and Blacksmiths Associations. Helen was always front and center when it came to activities and projects around town, exhibit halls, barbeques and parade floats. She always made creative birthday cakes for her kids in dozens of themes and shapes and eventually graduated to wedding cakes. Over the years Helen opened her home and her heart to six foreign exchange students and dozens of her children's friends. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Yvonne Clawson, Mary Imler, and Evelyn(Kelly)Halstead Tickler. Services will be Nov 20, at the New Baptist church.
