Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2016 at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. James Church in Le Mars. Visitation will resume from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the church. Helen Marie Schleis was born September 9, 1932 in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Mack) Schleis. Early on, she lived with her family in Mapleton, Iowa. In 1943, she moved with her family to an acreage west of Le Mars. She attended St. Joseph’s School, leaving after her sophomore year to join the work force. She was united in marriage to George Kilker on October 26, 1955 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. She and George lived in Fairmont, Minnesota for a short time before returning to Le Mars in 1962. During this time, Helen was a homemaker for her family. In 1968, she and George moved to Oyens, Iowa. While living in Oyens, Helen was the head cook for the students of St. Catherine’s school, a position she held for over 20 years. She and George were also the groundkeepers for the church and cemetery for several years. George passed away February 11, 2008. In 2009, Helen moved to Le Mars. In 2011, she moved to Prime Living Apartments in Le Mars and in February of 2015 she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars. While living in Oyens for over 40 years, she was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church where she sang in the church choir and was in the guild. After moving to Le Mars, she became a member of St. James Catholic Church. Through the years, she enjoyed quilting, embroidery, cooking, crossword puzzles, and watching the “Lawrence Welk Show”. Her favorite pastime was her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved attending as many of their activities as possible. Survivors include her 3 daughters: Lynne (Ken) Hoffman of Merrill, IA, Sue (Steve) Kommes of Le Mars, IA, and Beth (Bruce) Koerselman of Le Mars, IA; her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Eric Hoffman (fiancé, Megan Marsh and her daughter, Abberly); Erin Hoffman, Kellie (Jeremy) Bollin and their children, Brenna, Braden, Kendall, and Mason; Jon (Hetal) Kommes and their son, Corbin; Stacey (Jacob) Brewer and their children, Nolan and Hallie; Katy (Francois) Brand; Konner Koerselman; and Kody Koerselman; her brother: Ed (JoAnn) Schleis of Le Mars, IA; two sisters in law: Rosemary Liesner of Remsen, IA, and Lorraine Kilker of Le Mars, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; 4 brothers: Bill Schleis, Walter Schleis, Leonard Schleis, and Laverne Schleis; a sister: Clara Rhodes; and their spouses.
