Helen Marie Witt was born October 10, 1915, at home, on the family farm near Bison, KS, to William and Louise Witt, and was the oldest of four children. She attended elementary and high school in Bison, graduating in 1933, and attended Fort Hays College, Hays, KS, for one year, earning a teaching certificate, and gained additional credit hours by attending several summer school courses. Helen taught at the Lone Star (country) School, near Bison for seven years. She married Rev. David Zimmerman on May 2, 1941, in a double wedding with her sister Ruth Witt, who married Howard Stude, at Bison’s First Baptist Church. As a minister’s wife, she was a homemaker and able assistant to her husband in church life in many churches, including Saltsburg, PA; Kyle, TX; LaSalle, CO; Cathay, ND; Tyndall & Danzig, SD; and, their final move, to Creston, NE in 1968. After her husband died in 1974, Helen continued to live in Creston until 1993, when she moved to an apartment in Columbus, NE. In 2004, due to mobility complications, Helen became a resident in the long-term care facility at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Lincoln, NE, where she lived until her death. Helen gathered friends, like many would gather armfuls of wild flowers. Likewise, she tended and cherished them, maintaining contact with some of the pupils she taught in grade school, many missionaries and church friends as well as extended family members, by visiting them, writing cards and letters, with telephone calls and, after moving to Madonna, via e-mail. She was never too busy to make time for friends. She enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, quilting and making denim rugs. She especially enjoyed making raised doughnuts and earned the flattering title of the "Doughnut Lady." Helen took piano lessons and learned to play the organ. She accompanied many singing groups, soloists and congregational singing. All her life she enjoyed board games, especially Rummikub and jigsaw puzzles. At Madonna, Helen took harmonica lessons, played in the Melodians Chime Choir and was a charter member of the Madonna Pink Hat Society. Helen lived her Christian faith every day. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 19:14. "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer."
