She died at Mercy Hospital in Valley City, ND on June 16, 2010. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the OliverNathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City. Helen Marjorie Knauss was born on August 17, 1916, in Hannaford, ND, the daughter of George and Mary Ellen (Brown) Knauss. She was the valedictorian of the Hannaford High School Class of 1934. Helen briefly attended Jamestown College. She worked in Indianapolis for a time. After returning to ND, she worked in Cooperstown at the Griggs County Court House as the first Clerk of the Draft Board. On December 15, 1940, she married Olaf Broten in Hannaford. They made their home on a farm three miles west of Dazey, and farmed there for the next 57 years. They retired in 1981, but continued to live on the farm. Olaf died on June 27, 1998. Helen was still residing at the farm at the time of her death. She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dazey and taught Sunday School there. She also belonged to the Lutheran Ladies' Aid as well as Homemakers. Helen worked on the election board for many years. Helen is survived by her daughters, Linda (Vernon) Schuler of Dazey, Louise Broten (Jim Jenness) of Valley City, ND, and Judy (Scott) Legge of Sanborn, ND; son, Jim (Pat) Broten of Dazey; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth (Carl) Lyngby of Grand Forks, ND; and a brother-in-law, Tupper Howden of Cooperstown. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Ralph, Fred, Harry, and Donald; and sisters, Rachel Day and Margaret Howden.
