Helen was very proud of her pioneer heritage. Her great- grandfather, a young bachelor of 21 years joined the first wagon train to Oregon helping to clear the wagon path and arriving in Oregon City in 1843. William Hatchette Vaughan was credited with hoisting the first wagon over the Oregon City bluff. He then traveled 16 miles south to the Malalla Prairie, where he established the first land claim in that area(1844). He was the first white man in Malalla Prairie to settle permanently. Helen attended schools in Bridgeport, Twisp, Winthrop and Okanogan, wherever her dad, Harry, could find work. It was while she was boarding at a home in Bridgeport and her mother was very ill with cancer that she first met the Dagnons. Her father was working for Francis Dagnon at his sawmill in the Chilliwist. During Christmas vacation Francis delivered lumber to Bridgeport and picked Helen up in his lumber truck to bring her home to the Chilliwist with him and her dad at the sawmill. It was snowing hard and they became stuck on the grade. They began to walk until someone with a team and sled picked them up and gave them a ride to the Olema school, where a Christmas program was going on. Charlie Dagnon had driven his mother and younger brother Robert to the school for the program, so they all had a ride back to the sawmill. There she met Charlie Dagnon. Helen's mother Lucy Vaughan died of cancer in 1932 at age 41, so Helen spent the summer on the Chilliwist helping Charlie's mother, Lillie Dagnon, with the cooking for about 20 people three meals a day. Charlie and Helen married on October 25, 1933. From October 1934 to August 1942 they had five children. While living in Twisp, she cooked in several restaurants, and worked as a clerk at Prince's in Oroville, The Men's Store in Tonasket, The Dime Store and Lee Frank's in Tonasket. Helen was also a lifetime member of the Tonasket Eagles. After Charlie built the sawmill in Pleasant Valley, Helen was the head bookkeeper and co-pilot as they delivered lumber and house logs from Chelan to Methow and Okanogan areas. Charlie died in 2001 after almost 67 years of marriage. Helen is survived by all five children, 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, Dorothy Nelson of Omak, Delores Franz, of Okanogan, Dal Dagnon (Joanne) of Tonasket, Don Dagnon, of Nighthawk, Tom Dagnon (Judy), of Moses Lake, and a wonderful friend Ralph Munns of Omak. Helen was preceeded in death by her parents, her husband Charlie; and granddaughter, Shelly. Memorial services will be Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel, with a potluck lunch to follow at Okanogan Eagles Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel and the Okanogan County Crematory on Elmway in Okanogan are caring for the arrangements.
