Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home after 10:00am Sunday, where the family will greet friends from 3:00 - 5:00pm. Helen May Kirkman was born June 12, 1926 in Oelwein, Iowa. She was the second of four children born to Allen and Helena Kirkman. Helen grew up in Boone and graduated from Boone High School in 1944. She actually danced on her skates and was chosen for a roller skating derby, but her parents would not let her compete as she needed to finish high school. Helen met her future husband at the roller rink in Boone while skating. After high school, Helen worked in Boone as a bookkeeper for the local dime store. On July 21, 1946 in Red Oak, Iowa, Helen was united in marriage to Gren Weant of Paton. After a 10 day honeymoon in New Mexico they moved into a house on the Weant Farm. They lived on the Weant family farm for 63 years. Helen and Gren had two children from their union, Vicky Marlene on September 24, 1949 and Pamela Ann on January 20, 1954. Helen was a homemaker. She helped Gren in the fields, driving tractor in the spring by getting the field ready for spring planting and hauling grain to the crib during fall harvest. She would help with the livestock. Any orphaned calf, pig, or lamb would fall under her care and would be raised as a pet. She loved cats and would spend time feeding them and talking to them. Gibby, the pet cat in Long Term received a lot of her attention. During the summers in the early 60’s she instructed kids at the Paton Roller Rink on the two-step and the waltz. She also managed the Paton Roller Rink for a couple of years. Helen was a 4-H leader in the early 60’s. She learned to ride a motorcycle when she was 50. Helen loved to take motorcycle trips with Gren and friends around the Iowa country side. She also enjoyed piecing quilts and has made one for each of her 7 grandchildren. Another pastime of Helen’s was fishing. They would fish the creeks and ponds in the area but her favorite was making the trip to Canada with her husband. She was very proud of a 20 pound Northern which was caught in the early 70’s and was mounted and hung on her dining room wall. She enjoyed picking up walnuts and hickory nuts in the fall. During the winter she would crack the nuts and pick them out of the shell. Helen enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s sporting events. Through following so many of her granddaughters ball games, she became known as Grandma Helen to the team members. One of Helen’s dreams was to go to Hawaii. In September 2005 her daughter Pam and son-in-law Terry helped her to fulfill this dream. They spent 10 magnificent days in Hawaii. She was always pleased to share memories of this trip. Helen and Gren were members of the Friends Church of Paton and then became members of the Salem United Methodist Church of Paton after the Friends Church dissolved. Helen was preceded in death by her parents: mother, Helena Klute, step-father, Conrad Klute, father, Allen Kirkman; husband, Gren Weant; brother, Cliff Kirkman; and sisters Jean Andrews and Arlene Quigley. Helen is survived by daughters Vicky Lautner and husband Wayne of Jefferson, and Pam Hillegas and husband Terry of Colorado, 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and friends at Long Term Care in Jefferson. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Greene County Medical Center Long Term Care Activity Fund, Diabetes Foundation, or Iowa Hospice.
