Born April 26, 1911, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Garfield Abraham and Ethel Mae Smith Hallowell. Miss Hallowell taught physical education at Mount Pleasant High School for 40 years. Henry St., Mount Pleasant, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at her home. Born April 26, 1911, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Garfield Abraham and Ethel Mae Smith Hallowell. Miss Hallowell taught physical education at Mount Pleasant High School for 40 years. During her tenure, she was the faculty sponsor for the cheerleaders, the Pep Club, the Maroon Echos (the school newspaper), the student council and the concession stand at all the athletic events. She graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and Iowa Wesleyan College with a bachelor of arts in music. She furthered her education by taking classes at the University of Iowa, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Colorado. She also attended many summers at Iowa Wesleyan College as well. She was instrumental in the AFS program for foreign exchange students. She visited them in their countries and kept in contact with many of them over the years. For eight weeks at a time for 30 summers, she was the head of camp divisions for the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Mich. She oversaw the divisions of High School Girls, All State and the University of Michigan Women. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was a 50–year member of the chancel choir. She also was a leader in the Girl Scouts. She served many terms as president of the Henry County Bird and Nature Club and was a member of Questers and the National Historic and Preservation Corps. In her spare time, she was a gifted woodworker, creating doll cradles and picture frames. She also excelled in her seamstress work, making interiors and pillows for the cradles. She was noted for her brownies, which was her treat at numerous meetings and get–togethers. Survivors include one sister, Virginia Aguirre of San Francisco; and one niece. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. The funeral for Miss Hallowell will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Edward R. Peterson, senior pastor, and Roger Williams officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant. A memorial has been established for Mapleleaf Field Athletic Complex. Contributor: Smileycake (47110408)
