Funeral services were held Monday, Apr. 2, 2007 at the Harmony Presbyterian Church, Hurley with burial in the Hurley Cemetery. Helen Olmstead was born on Aug. 22, 1915 at Hurley, SD to Oscar and Gertrude (Hougland) Olmstead. Funeral services were held Monday, Apr. 2, 2007 at the Harmony Presbyterian Church, Hurley with burial in the Hurley Cemetery. Helen Olmstead was born on Aug. 22, 1915 at Hurley, SD to Oscar and Gertrude (Hougland) Olmstead. In 1933 she graduated from Hurley High School, received her teaching certificate from Freeman Jr. College, and BA degree from Yankton College in 1971. On Jan. 28, 1938 she was united in marriage to Royal DeNeui at Chancellor, SD. Helen taught school in two Turner County rural schools, Districts 21 and 89, Davis, Chancellor, and Hurley. After retiring she was a substitute teacher and volunteer worker until she was 80 years old. In 1991 she was recognized by the Joppa Masonic Lodge of Hurley with the Outstanding Citizen Award. Her husband died on Oct. 4, 1978. She was a very active member of the Harmony Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, and Hurley Senior Citizens Center. She had been a member of the Turner County School Board and served on the Hurley Zoning Board for 20 years. Grateful for having shared her life are two children, Audrey (Darell) Eide, Parker and Robert (Carol), Hurley; 8 grandchildren, Richard (Elizabeth) Mills, Rhonda (Lon) Hellenga, Randall (Lisa) Mills, Shon (Gerri) Eide, Michael (Kerri) DeNeui, Mitchell DeNeui, Melissa DeNeui, and Melinda DeNeui; 10 great grandchildren, Jamie (Eric) Anderson, Joshua Mills, Kaylee and Sydney Hellenga, Melissa and Haley Mills, Hunter and Tanner Eide, and Holly and Seth DeNeui; and 2 sisters, Audrey Benson Winterfeld, Wittier, CA and Delight Arends Pedersen, Mt. Ayr, IA.
