Born third into the Burley family of 8 children and raised on a farm outside Lake City, Iowa, she attended a rural one-room school before graduating with honors in 1931. The Depression made college unavailable, so she taught school until her 1934 marriage. During the years in Schaller and Lake Park, she assisted her husband, Max, an undertaker until 1957. Read More	Helen Knowles passed away on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at her daughter's home in Mill Valley, CA. Born third into the Burley family of 8 children and raised on a farm outside Lake City, Iowa, she attended a rural one-room school before graduating with honors in 1931. The Depression made college unavailable, so she taught school until her 1934 marriage. During the years in Schaller and Lake Park, she assisted her husband, Max, an undertaker until 1957. She resided in Pocahontas 50 years, where she owned a woman's dress store for 15 years until retiring in 1973. The couple played duplicate bridge all over the area until his death in 1986, having celebrated 52 years together. Helen loved quilting and entered the local fair, winning numerous ribbons. She helped friends and family, attended the Presbyterian church, read extensively, and traveled with relatives, as well as her annual winter visits to the west coast. Her two children are Sandra Hendrickson and Sharon Knowles from Seattle. Both her granddaughters and five great-grandchildren will attend a family service where Helen has lived for 4 years. Quite healthy and active all her life, she simply succumbed to old age and died in the night. We were fortunate to have her on this earth for 97 1/2 years. She was a good person, and we will miss her.
