Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday at Stavanger Friends Church, rural Marshalltown. Visitation will be at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home Thursday from 6 to 8 PM with the family present. Helen was born August 30, 1926 to Adrian and Sarah Marie (Peery) Stanley in Des Moines, IA. She graduated from William Penn College with a degree in Home Economics in 1948. She married Clarence B. Stangeland, August 15, 1948 in Spencer chapel, William Penn College campus, Oskaloosa, IA. Helen and Clarence moved to the family farm near Dunbar in 1949. Helen made the farm her home for 56 years. She was a homemaker, paraprofessional at Miller Junior High and provided day care for her grandchildren until the youngest started school. Helen was a member or Stavanger Friends Church where she played the organ, taught Sunday School and served on committees. She was a member of the Stavanger Sewing Circle, Married Mixers Club and sang in the Farm Bureau Woman's Chorus. Helen was past president of the William Penn College Alumni Association and a member of the National Stanley Family Association. Her hobbies included genealogy, sewing and traveling with her husband Clarence. Family and friends around the world benefited from her kindness and hospitality. She is survived by her children, Lloyd (Charlotte) Stangeland, Oskaloosa, IA, Karen Rasmussen, Marshalltown, Sharon (Gene) Hoover, rural Marshalltown; grandchildren Clayton and Andy Stangeland, Hannah and Noel Hoover; brothers Marvin and (Dottie) Stanley, Terre Haute, IN and Richard (Carol) Stanley, Connersville, IN; sisters Carolyn Harlan, Terre Haute, IN and Margaret (Rawlins) Whitaker, Morgantown, IN; brother-in-law Andrew Stangeland, Marshalltown and sister-in-law Beverly (Betty) Stangeland, Grinnell; two YFU daughters Gro Gjedrem of Norway and Monica (Xavier) Paetau de Gonzalez of Mexico and a foster granddaughter Sue (Dennis) Engler Wendt. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and brothers-in-law Mike Harlan and Tilman Stangeland. Memorials may be directed to Stavanger Friends Church or Quakerdale Children's Home.
