Main St. Helen Schmidt was born on September 6, 1923 to Peter S. and Eva (Fuehrer) Schmidt at their home in rural Campbell County, SD. She grew up there and received her education at rural school. Eva was baptized and confirmed at the Artas Reformed Church. On June 9, 1946, Helen married Erwin Stabler at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka, SD. by pastor P.A. Heinrichs. They were members of the Zion Lutheran Church, Eureka They had one child, Duane. Together they farmed in the Eureka area for 20 years. On March 5, 1966, Erwin died from a farm accident during a snow storm. In June 1968 she and son, Duane, moved to Aberdeen, SD where she started her 25 plus years as a nurse’s-aid at St. Luke’s Hospital. She retired in 1993 although sometimes would be called back to help out when needed. Helen married Marvin Tichota in March 1973, he died August 28, 1974, from smoke inhalation sustained from a house fire. He is buried in Dell Rapids, SD. Helen continued to live in Aberdeen until September 2014 when she moved to Arbors Lane, Burnsville to be near her son Duane and daughter-in-law, Dorothy. Helen was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. Helen was a hard worker, whether it be on the farm or at St. Lukes. She enjoyed a variety of handy crafts and was always very artistic. Her home and yard were always neat and clean, something she took pride in dong. She also enjoyed travel as well as time with friends and family. Grateful for having shared Helen’s life were her son, Duane (Dorothy Wangler) Stabler, Savage, MN, sister-in-law Erna Gross, Aberdeen and sister-in-law Gladys Schmidt, Duncanville, TX as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Eva was preceded in death by her husbands, Erwin and Marvin, parents, Peter and Eva, sisters, Christine Wacker, Emma Koth, Lydia Berreth, Eva Stabler & Ida Nitschke and her brothers Peter P. Schmidt and Harvey Schmidt. Memorials in Helen’s honor may be sent to Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen.
