Sawyer, a resident of Chelan for 60 years, died June 19 in the loving care of the staff at Cedar Street Retirement Home where she lived. Helen was born December 21, 1917 in Twisp, WA to Charles and Henrietta (Nellie) Loebsack Schmidt. She was one of five children. Sawyer, a resident of Chelan for 60 years, died June 19 in the loving care of the staff at Cedar Street Retirement Home where she lived. Helen was born December 21, 1917 in Twisp, WA to Charles and Henrietta (Nellie) Loebsack Schmidt. She was one of five children. Her parents and her brother Charlie, sisters June (Eiffert) and Fern (White) preceded her in death. Helen married Francis Cushen in 1936 and they had two children – Darline Dieffenbacher (husband Gary) of Chelan and Peter Cushen (wife Carol) of Kent. In 1946 she married George Sawyer and they had nearly 50 happy years together before he died in 1995. Helen worked for several years at Kline's Department Store in Chelan and later packed apples for many years. She was a member of The Chelan Eagles for over 35 years. Her family will remember her as a loving mother and grandmother and as the best cook in the world. Helen is survived by her children, Pete and Darline, her sister Lois Lince of Twisp, WA, five grandchildren - Lynda Lipe (Ralph) of Yarrow Point, WA, Mike Beasley (Karen) of Camas, WA, Pat Beasley of Chelan, WA, Vince Cushen (Kim) of Burien, WA and Velvet Cushen of Las Vegas, NV. She is also survived by seven great grand children and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be Tuesday, June 24 at 11am at Precht Rose Chapel in Chelan. Visitation will be Monday June 23 from 3 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday June 24 from 9 to 10 a.m. at Precht Rose Chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chelan Eagles Scholarship Fund in the memory of Helen Sawyer.
