Description	:	Helen Virginia Smith, age 102, passed away peacefully June 3, 2017 at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa. She was the fifth daughter of seven children born to John and Elsie (Getts) Jenkins on August 13, 1914. She graduated from Cotter (Iowa) Consolidated Schools and attended Iowa State Teachers College. Read More	Helen Virginia Smith, age 102, passed away peacefully June 3, 2017 at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa. She was the fifth daughter of seven children born to John and Elsie (Getts) Jenkins on August 13, 1914. She graduated from Cotter (Iowa) Consolidated Schools and attended Iowa State Teachers College. Helen married Gerald Smith on November 17, 1934. Together, they farmed in Louisa County, southeast Iowa. In 1952 they moved to Ogden and purchased the local Ford dealership, which they operated for 20 years. Helen later worked for the US Postal Service in Ogden and Des Moines. She was a member of the Cotter Presbyterian Church and the Community United Methodist Church in Ogden. She was a 50-year member, Past Worthy Matron, and district instructor of the Order of The Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Boone Brush and Palette Club. Her love of art and creative expression began with sewing doll clothes and progressed to sewing clothes for herself and her daughters. She loved music and enjoyed her large eclectic collection. She was a prolific painter and gifted numerous oil paintings to family members. She often expressed thanks for having parents who enabled her to pursue her interests. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 24 at 1:00 p.m. in the Eastern Star Masonic Home chapel, with Rev. Gary Hoyt officiating. Helen chose to donate her body to the Anatomy Department at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, hoping to help further medical advances. The cremains will be interred at a later date in Glenwood Cemetery in Ogden, Iowa. Donations in the the memory of Helen may be made to: Iowa Dept. for the Blind, 524 4th St., Des Moines, IA 50309. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Gerald Gordon Smith, two brothers: Richard and Charles Jenkins, four sisters: Harriet Newman, Marie Wagenknecht, Marjorie Woolsey, Mary Ehrhardt. She is survived by her daughters: Caroline (Richard, deceased) Harmison of Freeport, IL and Sherrie (John) Nystrom of Nevada, IA, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.∼this was created prior to passing and is a duplicate that needs deleted
