Description	:	Helen W. Kennedy, 97, of Pittsburg, Kan., passed away at 3:40 a.m. Friday, December 23, 2016, at Guest Home Estates. She was born July 16, 1919, in Pittsburg, the daughter of Charles Henry and Jessie (Gardner) Wyman. She attended Lakeside Elementary before graduating from College High. She then graduated from Pittsburg State University. In 1946, she was united in marriage to Verne H. "Bub" Kennedy. To this union was born two children, Charles "Chuck" and Jeannette. She was born July 16, 1919, in Pittsburg, the daughter of Charles Henry and Jessie (Gardner) Wyman. She attended Lakeside Elementary before graduating from College High. She then graduated from Pittsburg State University. In 1946, she was united in marriage to Verne H. "Bub" Kennedy. To this union was born two children, Charles "Chuck" and Jeannette. She and her husband, owned and operated the Kennedy Market at Washington and Walnut from 1947 until 1961. They were married for 26 years. After they sold the market, Mrs. Kennedy worked as a bookkeeper for Joe Smith Tobacco Company until she retired. Following retirement, she became a Sorority Mom for Alpha Gamma Delta at Pittsburg State University. She also worked as a receptionist at the Newman Center for Fr. York. Membership was held in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the Sigma Sigma Sigma at PSU, of which she was the oldest member. She was very active in the Democratic Party, attending many functions and rallies, where she had met then senator, John F. Kennedy. Their common last name made a connection and conversation she always remembered. She was also a former member of the Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include a daughter, Jeannette Minnis and her husband, Daniel Minnis, of Pittsburg; five grandchildren, Brandon Crespino (Joanna), Casie Stephens (Kirk), Cori Schmidt (Kyle), Joshua Minnis, and Danielle Geandomenico (Marco); eight great-grandchildren; nieces, Bunny Smith and Karen Smith Brown; and nephew, Gary Smith, and several other nieces and nephews. The family would also like to send a special thanks to the management and staff at Guest Home Estates for their tremendous care of Helen for the last six years. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Charles "Chuck" Gardner Kennedy; a sister, Lois Arlene Smith; a nephew, Jim Smith; and an infant grandson, Christopher Kennedy. Services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, December 26, at Brenner Mortuary with Fr. Robert McElwee officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 27, in the Mt. Olive Abbey, Pittsburg. Friends are requested to meet at the cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the Safe House Pittsburg Building Campaign. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS, 66762.
