Mein Schulunterricht begann in Tralau. Da in Preußen den Mennoniten die Wehrfreiheit genommen wurde, zogen meine Eltern 1870 nach Rußland. Hier durfte ich durch Privatstunden meinen Schulunterricht weiterführen. Doch auch in Rußland wurde ihnen die Wehrfreiheit genommen, und so zogen die Eltern 1872 wieder zurück nach Preußen, und schon in 1876 verleißen sie, mit vielen andern Freunden, West-Preußen, und siedelten bei Beatrice, Nebr. an.
