Funeral services will be 10:30 AM on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at First Assembly of God Church in Yankton with Pastor Jeff Mantz officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton. Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Helmuth Holmgren was born January 12, 1923, southwest of Naper, Nebraska, to Henry and Hulda (Stahlecker) Holmgren. He attended country school and graduated from Naper High School in 1940. He married Ona Hiatt on June 11, 1945 in Ord, Nebraska and continued farming with his father until 1946. They moved to Spencer, Nebraska, where he ran a gas station and later worked for Swift & Co. They then moved to Butte, Nebraska, where Helmuth worked on Fort Randall Dam and later Gavins Point Dam until 1957. They moved to Yankton, South Dakota and Helmuth worked at the State Hospital, and as the custodian for the Yankton School District and the Safety Center until retiring in 1988. Helmuth was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Yankton and enjoyed watching sports, vegetable gardening, being with his family and attending any and all church activities. Survivors include his four children: Wesley Holmgren of Port Orchard, Washington; Myrna (Curt) Beringer of Meridian, Idaho; Rollis (Keith) Undem of Apple Valley, Minnesota; and Rollin Holmgren of Waverly, Nebraska; ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and sister, Nola Holmgren of Bonesteel, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Ona on February 10, 2017. - Wintz & Ray Funeral Home
