Deceased was born in the Netherlands and immigrated to this country in 1854: coming to Holland Michigan. He was married there to Miss Jantje Veddes and in 1877- came to Sioux county settling on a farm three miles northeast of Alton which he worked for a number of years afterwards retiring and moving to Hospers. Deceased leaves a widow to survive him and was the father of nine children of which eight are living they are Henry and Herman and John all of Hospers. Mrs Jennie Kones of Castlewood South Dakota, William Woertink of Estelline South Dakota, Mrs. Rieka Jacobsma of Hospers, Mrs, Anna Landhuis of Leota Minnesota, Mrs. Lizzie Weis of Hospers. Funeral services were held at the Dutch Reformed church at Hospers of which he was a devoted member. Interment took place in the Nassau township cemetery southwest of Alton. The entire community sympathizes with the bereaved widow and children in their sad loss. -Obituary from The Alton Democrat (7/24/1909)
