He would have been 82 Jan. 21. Mr. Meyer had been in rather feeble health for the past two years, rarely venturing down town and living the even quiet life that was so characteristic of him. Mr. Meyer had many friends and he enjoyed them. On those occasions the past summer when he felt able to venture down town he was greeted by friends and these greetings returned by his quiet smile and sincere response. He was a man who meddled with on one's affairs who loved his family and his home and enjoyed his grandchildren, and was considerate of the rights of others. He was a devout Catholic. He was a pioneer farmer of this vicinity, still owning the farm he bought here nearly 41 years ago. Mr. Meyer was born in Bergh, Holland, Jan. 21, 1851. He grew to manhood there and was there married to Bernadine Englen, nearly 51 years ago. They came to America 46 years ago to Carroll county, Iowa, and after six years there came to Randolph in the spring of 1892, and bought the home farm two miles north of town. In December 1913. Mr. Meyer retired from active farming and moved to town where he lived for 18 years. He was the last of his family of nine. About 20 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Meyer visited their old home in Germany and enjoyed a wonderful three months with members of the family living at that time. Deceased leaves his wife, four sons and three daughters; Ben, Henry W, Mrs. E.G. Atherton, Mrs. Joe Havorka and Mrs. Earl Hickel, all of Randolph; John of Creighton and F. C. of Omaha. He also leaves 24 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9:30 at St. Frances church, with burial in the Catholic cemetery. Six of his grandsons will act as casket bearers. Source: Newspaper Article - Golden Wedding Anniversary Randolph Couple Married 50 Years Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meyer Quietly Celebrate Important Life Event Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meyer, Randolph citizens for 39 years, celebrated in a quiet way last week their golden wedding. They were married April 14, 1880, at Ulft, Holland. In 1886 they came to america and settled at Carroll, Iowa, engaging in farming. In 1891 they moved to Randolph and bought the home place two miles north of Randolph, now farmed by E. G. Atherton. Here they lived about 24 years, retiring from active farm work and moving to Randolph 15 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Meyer now enjoy their garden and chickens, and both are quite active for their years. Mr. Meyer is 79, and Mrs. Meyer 72. Mr. and Mrs. Meyer are the parents of ten children, seven of them living. They are: Ben, Henry, Mrs. E. G. Atherton, Mrs. Joe Havorka, and Mrs. Earl Hickel, of Randolph; John, of Creighton; and F. C. of Omaha. A son, Peter, died three years ago at Hugo, Colorado, and two died in infancy. They also have 24 grandchildren. As several members of the family are indisposed at the present time, the family gathering has been postponed until a later date.
